R.I.P. Percy Sledge

What a voice. Surprised he was only 73 for some reason.

I’ll be honest, when I think of Percy only 1 song comes to mind but what a song. When a Man Loves a Woman is an awesome song. His voice was great.

Definitely his most well-known song. He had one of the classic soul voices.

YouTube link for “The Dark End of the Street”.

That song is 49 years old, and sounds like it was recorded by a guy who’s seen a lot of life. He was 24? I thought he was older too.

I had a Percy Sledge greatest hits tape, but all I can remember now is that one song, too. But what a damn song.

Listen to him on Take Time to Know Her if you get a chance. Sounds like he is really hurt. Damn good Soul Singer. I also love is version on Dark End of the Street
RIP

Back in 1967, the first time I heard “Whiter Shade of Pale” on the radio, I thought it was Percy Sledge singing.

What a voice!

RIP :frowning:

Yes RIP!

In the movie The Commitments (1991), a young lad goes into the confessional:

Steve Clifford: [in confessional] Used to, when I studied I would sing hymns, but now all I can sing is “When A Man Loves A Woman” by Marvin Gaye
Father Molloy: Percy Sledge.
Steve Clifford: What?
Father Molloy: It was Percy Sledge did that particular song. I have the album.
Steve Clifford: Oh…

I played several Percy Sledge tunes as a tribute to him on my radio show (only about two hours after I found out he had passed away on the 14th):

WAMLAW (biggest hit)
It Tears Me Up
Take Time To Know Her
Out of Left Field
Cover Me

Got a HUGE response. My listeners really loved him. The CD is called “It Tears Me Up” – available on Rhino.
