R.O. Teen sues parents for ...aw fuck it

There’s definitely something fishy about the boyfriend. And he oughtta shave those whiskers.

Quite the insular rant, however, rather than charging off into the hinterland, you might want to have a look at the law in the state in question, where child support does continue for adult children of divorced or separated parents when there is a dependency (such as the adult child going to college and not having the funds sufficient to do so).

The question then is should child support for a dependant adult child in college only be permitted if the parents are separated, or should it apply even if they are not separated. Given the valid interest of the state in ensuring that dependent adult children are supported (which is the case given the very firm child support laws in that state for the dependant children of separated couples), then should the children of couples who have not separated be discriminated against, or should this loophole be closed?

No, it’s whiskey.

Unless you count the fact that she was genetically-predisposed toward intelligence and wouldn’t have been without their DNA, there’s a chance her parents didn’t help her graduate with honors *or *get into college. Some people are more driven than others. Some people are paradoxically driven harder to succeed the more their parents try to stop them. Without knowing these people personally, you just don’t know.

Agreed, to an extent: they really have to pay the school fees. Come on, that’s non-negotiable. They signed up for them, they pay them. Paying for your kid’s living expenses in their last year or school is also not asking much unless they are actually asking for ridiculous sums. Maybe they are, expecting to have to bargain down.

Also, don’t you get tax deductions for paying into a college fund for your kids? Does that change if you decide to keep the money for yourself? Genuine question.

I actually do feel for the parents in this case too. Shame it wasn’t sorted out before it got to court.

I looked up the rules on 529 college savings, there are tax implications if the money isn’t spent for education, however the child is not “entitled” to the money, unless there were other legal restrictions on the money before it was placed in the 529.

Huh. So it is. I thought that was a uniquely American affectation.

While I think the suing daughter probably is a spoiled brat, I have to feverently disagree with your assertation that parents are necessary influences for becoming a graduating honors student. Many, many people graduate with honors in spite of their parents, not because of them.

And the award for “Least Surprising Post of the Year” goes to…

Well, that post made it all worthwhile. Thanks!
My mother kicked me out when I was 17. Probably because I was an insufferable prick and addict. I had no idea I could take her to court.

She’s got a purdy mouth.

Why would she need to do that? At 18 she’s an adult, not a minor.

fafsa.

Agree that may people graduate and go on to do very well in school in spite of, not because of, their parents…but many many *more *do in fact do well in school because of their parents. We know this because household income, parents’ education level, parental involvement in their children’s education, etc are all widely acknowledged to be very accurate when it comes to predicting a child’s educational success, test scores etc.

On the other hand, I wouldn’t be 18 again if I could do it rich and good-looking.

Yeah, I guess there’s that.

Yeah, I don’t need to do go through that twice. Much better being rich and good-looking as a 28yr old…

On the other hand, I wonder if the parents of this bratty teenager will sue her for costing them an $80,000 legal settlement because of an indiscreet Facebook post:

"“Mama and Papa Snay won the case against Gulliver,” Snay wrote to her 1,200 Facebook friends. “Gulliver is now officially paying for my vacation to Europe this summer. SUCK IT.”

Gulliver (Preparatory School) had agreed to the confidential settlement in an age discrimination case, but after the Facebook post argued that the settlement terms had been breached. An appeals court agreed.

Ouch.

I guess that was a case of Snay say.

Some boyfriends are Navy Seals. He’s just a seal.
