“Think of the fact that, in general, people tend to be more sexually attracted to members of their own racial group.”
This was a quote made by a psychiatrist (in an unrelated article) that caught my eye. I’m Indian, and while I definitely am attracted to Indian women, I certainly am not “more attracted” to them. In fact, I know that I’m most attracted to Latina and Brazilian women.
So I thought that I may as well start an SDMB poll to test the veracity of the quote. Since many people are of multiple racial groups, and ‘race’ itself is interpreted in different ways, for the purposes of this poll please use whatever racial group that you identify most with.
Also, I’ve made this poll “private” to avoid anyone getting themselves in trouble with an SO.
I’m thinking that by “more” he meant “more often”. As in, Indians (for example) are generally attracted to Indians, but some will prefer other races.
I voted other – attraction is more consistent with most other races, more variable with caucasians both on the high and low end.
I’m Indian and blue or green eyes and blond hair are what make my knees weak. So no, Indian guys don’t generally attract me. While I like dark hair and dark eyes sometimes, generally I prefer my men to be less…hirsute than Indian men tend to be.
I don’t really understand the distinction you’re trying to make between options 2 and 3. Can you elaborate?
Yes. Some people are just not attracted to members of their own racial group. I recently dated a Colombian girl who did not find Latin men attractive. I probably should have phrased that one differently.
no option for those who don’t see race?
I’m a Caucasian male, most often attracted to other Caucasian males. Hispanic and middle eastern some, Asian and African american rarely.
I’m female, and I’m most attracted to attractive people. As far as I can tell, I have no preference for any particular racial or ethnic group.
Yeah I really don’t get the difference between least attracted to my own and most attracted to others.
Yeah, where’s the “I’m a liar” option?
(I’m not saying it’s not possible to not have a preference, but everyone SEES race, come on.)
I’m male and I like females.
I chose the last option.
I voted “other” - I have no clear ethnic preference in the people I’m attracted to. I have some ethnic preference in people I’m not attracted to, but it doesn’t relate to my own ethnicity.
I…seem to have something in my eye.
sniff

Most attracted to brunettes, redheads, Arabic, south Asian, and Hispanic women. Sometimes attracted to black women. Rarely attracted to blondes and east Asian women.
For short term mating, I want to play the field and explore. I’m not too interested in hooking up with a woman that looks too much like myself. It would feel like jacking off a clone. As for long term mating, race is unimportant.
Last option, sexual attraction is simply based on individuals attractiveness to me.
I’m a white woman and am primarily attracted to white men. I am rarely, if ever, attracted to Black or East Asian men. I have been attracted to Hispanic and Indian men (both Native American and from the Indian subcontinent). I would happily go on a first date with someone of any race who had a good personality and wasn’t what I consider unattractive, because attraction for me develops as I get to know someone. Plenty of men of all races are what I would call “attractive enough”, that is, if they had a good personality and compatibility with me, attraction would probably develop. Race isn’t really a factor here.
However, when it comes to seeing someone on the street and thinking “wow, he’s hot”, for some reason that is much more likely to be a man of my own race.
I’m Male and equally attracted to members of all racial groups.
If the answering party is white, I assume it’s the difference between:
(1) Love Asians
(2) Like Whites, Blacks
(3) Totally turned off by Eskimos
-and-
(1) Love Asians
(2) Like Eskimos, Blacks
(3) Totally turned off by Whites
I’ve certainly had relation ships with all kinds of men, but I generally find myself most attracted to non white guys. I’m white, by the way. Anyway, black, hispanic, whatever tend to just give me that instant “Oomf!” reaction more often than white guys.
Dark haired, olive complected white guys (like me, I’m Italian) are way more attractive to me than blonde haired blue eyed white guys, so I think I just like darker features.
