The problem is that Maddow’s show did shitty journalism. (It might not have been Maddow herself.) This “Poe’s Law” excuse is a load of stupid horseshit. The most cursory sort of professional journalism would have revealed that the Palin story was false.
They were lazy and incompetent. That was the problem, nothing else.
Again, I don’t think you grok what was the problem. The story was quoted as an example of right-wing calls to action. It wasn’t presented as factual reporting of something Palin was going to do.
It was as if
Guy 1 says: Palin should get a gun and kill Osama!
Guy 2 says: Palin should have a nightly news show!
Guy 3 says: Palin should run for president and shame the libs!
Guy 4 says: Palin should go to Egypt and rally them!
And not realizing that guy 4 is being sarcastic. Ya dig?
If the noise on the right wasn’t full of insane rantings ala-Beck, it would be easier to tell apart. I’m not saying they didn’t make a mistake, but they retracted it immediately and owed up to it.
Der Trihs has called for all people who have ever donated money to a religious cause to be deported to Cuba.
Diogenes the Cynic has suggested that anyone who enters into a non-monogamous relationship should be neutered.
I have no large reason to doubt these statements, if someone reported them to me. Should I thus publish these two statements as factual comments by these posters, or should I verify the accuracy first?
That’s not a good analogy. A good one would be if elucidator had told the above a joke about Der Trihs and Dio, and that you, not knowing that elucidator has a tendency to make jokes, reported that “elucidator says that Dio wants to neuter all polygamists.” Then, the next day you check into the SDMB, you post an apology post about misunderstanding, apologizing to elucidator, but not Dio.
As opposed to the Right which always does proper fact checking? Like their claim that Obama’s recent trip to Asia was going to cost $200 million per day.
In this particular case, the point was the story itself. Maddow was apparently reporting on what ChristWire thinks Palin ought to be doing, not on Palin.
Maddow said, aboutChristwire recommending invading Israel “To be clear, this is what this website is asking Sarah Palin to do. It’s not Sarah Palin’s own idea.”
I guess I’m finding it hard to see what you are all het up about.
Der Trihs said there are no left wing politicians in America. I live in the San Francisco area, where there most certainly are left wing politicians. I only had to name one to disprove his point. It’s not a matter of how big they are – it’s whether they exist at all.
Anyway, Ammiano is now a state assemblyman after years of being on the S.F. board of supervisors. I could see him getting elected to congress one day.
