Help! I’m looking for a song, but I only vaguely remember a few things about it (and remember, I said vague!):
-
I remember listening to it on the radio in 1999-2000 (in Australia, but it is undoubtedly an American song)
-
The general premise is about this guy (private investigator?) who gets a call to track down a quasi-nemisis of his.
-
The PI is on vacation in Florida (drinking something like a margarita on the beach?) when he gets the call. He jumps in his car and drives to the town where the “bad guy” is.
-
The bad guy somehow gets everyone in this town to go somewhere and dance. (??) (okay, he’s not that bad, as this seems to be his only crime)
-
The PI gets to this town and finds all the people except one kid gone. The kid tells him where everybody is (dancing?).
-
The PI rushes over to this dance hall, finds everyone there, runs over to the DJ station and sees a record with a message taped to it that says something like, “got you!” The PI exclaims something like, “One of these days!” and then goes back on vacation.
-
The PI narrates the song in plain speech, so it isn’t as much of a song as a lyrical-poem (is that the right term?), with a background musical beat.
Hmm. Okay, this is a strange song, but it’s been in my head for days now, and it’s killing me. This may have been somewhat popular in the States when I was in Australia, but I have no idea (it was on TripleJ in Oz, incidentally, which plays a lot of out-of-the-ordinary songs).
Anyone? Thanks!
