Raiding on RP servers.

I’ve never had a character on an RP server in an MMORPG, but I imagine it isn’t all that different aside from the obvious. However, after a sport of dungeoneering, i’ve realised that in a lot of cases it’s a pretty hectic situation. I can’t imagine that RPing can really work with that kind of constraints. So what happens? Does everyone drop RPing? Do people generally not run through instances on the RP servers?

I’m in the top raiding guild on an RP server (Blackwater Raiders) and I would say that in my case, I gave up RPing a long time ago. I know there are some guilds here that combine RP and raiding, but I don’t think any of them are anywhere near the top of the progression. If any of them are in T5 I’d be surprised.

(Our server is pretty slow progression-wise–there are two Horde guilds and one Alliance guild alliance that have killed Illidan, nobody’s killed anything in Sunwell yet).

Assuming you’re talking about WoW, that is.

WoW player here.

I used to be in an RP raiding community (on an RP server). Basically, all raids were carried out in an in-game context, and people were in character at all times in /say. Instructions and stuff were given in the raid and party channels, which were OOC.

The specific aim of the community was to make good raiding progress while also engaging in roleplaying. In a raid, that would mean quite a bit of rousing speeches, in-between battle dialogue, one-liners upon facing a boss, so on. The community wasn’t one of the über-leet ones, because it wasn’t so focused on loot. But a raid didn’t take longer because people were roleplaying - we did that in the breaks. There was a good team spirit, good discipline and we got Nefarian on the 2nd try. (The only reason we didn’t get him on the first was that one of the healers misclicked and cast Divine Intervention on the tank  )

I’ve also tried raiding in super leet non-RP raid communities and found it dull. My SO compared it to watching porn as opposed to making sweet lurve: It’s ugly, fast and you’re done in half an hour with a sense of having been cheated somehow.
