What's the difference between normal, PvP and RPG?

I got the world’s most effective timesink, World of Warcraft. I think a black hole lies in the middle of it. This is the second Mighty Massive Morphin Power Player Online. . . whatever. My first was Runescape-- a free and fun way to waste hours. Runescape didn’t have these different type servers so the only thing I cared about was which server had the less people on it.

I’m not quite sure what these different type of servers mean. I play on Thunderhorn (I was hoping to see the SDMB Guild there, but they all seem to be gone) so I know what a “normal” server does. I have an impression that PvP is where all the macho guys hang out and beat the crap out of each other. I’m afraid of it even though I’ve never been on one. And I have absolutely no idea what happens on an RPG server.
Can you explain to this newbie?

Pvp = Player Vrs Player, and you have it right, players on pvp servers beat the crap out of each other.
Rp = Role Playing, as in the people there talk as if they ARE their characters heres a link to a run in on a pvp server between a gm and a RP guild

PvP == Player vs Player - basically players are allowed to kill eachother.

RP == Role Play - servers for people who get into their characters. They still go out and kill things, but they interact in character.

We’re still there. Some of us keep odd hours though. Are you logged into the SDMB channel?

Anyway I just logged on and got Shadowtusks to monitor the SDMB channel. His alt is an officer named Gorm who can join you up and he’s usually on for hours.

Hope to see you in the World. If you want to go to the guild website it’s www.burningdoglegion.com not much there but I always have hope that people will start using the forums more.

Well, it says joined channel SDMB only I don’t know how to talk on it or anything. I will read your forums though-- for juicy insight and court intrigue.

Well just type /SDMB then type your message. Or easier if the SDMB channel is say [4. SDMB] you can just type /4 then your message. I have the next two days off and I’m usually on at night. I’ll keep an eye out for you if you haven’t already found another officer.

More specifically:

PvP servers: if you’re in a contested area or an area belonging to the other faction (say, trying to go to Ironforge if you’re horde) you’re open to PvP at any time. If you’re in your own area (near Orgrimmar for horde, for example) you have to attack someone (or type /pvp) to open yourself up to be attacked.

PvE (normal) servers: you are never flagged unless you 1. flag yourself by typing /pvp 2. attack someone or 3. buff someone who is pvp flagged. Once you flag yourself on a PvE server you can turn off pvp by again typing /pvp and it will run out after 5 minutes.

RP: In PvP terms, they act like PvE servers. The only difference is that people are supposed to speak in character and roleplay their parts.

I’ll be on on and off all day (and probably all night) today seeing as how it’s Saturday and I’m a hopeless dweeb.

RPG sounds interesting. I have a level 16 Night Elf Druid who I love and have a whole made-up life story imagined for her (I told you I was a dweeb) and it sounds like fun to play without 12 year olds telling me they like my boobies. Yet those RPG types can get a little weird about stuff.

PvP is not for me. How can you get anything done with people attacking you all the time?

I can’t imagine how. And from what I’ve seen on various WoW forums, the new Honor System has just made things worse than before.

I’m not on that server, but I swear, if I saw someone running around with a guild name of “Burning Dog Legion”, I’d die laughing right there! (As well as knowing instantly that they were Dopers)

(Joram lvl 20 Human Warrior/ Lowwron lvl 12 Tauren Druid)

I’m Freeringtone. Yeah, maybe I should have randomized it. I’ve got a human warrior level 9, but don’t like her much.
Here’s the idea I’m just now formulating. I play Freeringtone on the Thunderhorn and use what I learn on a brand new Elf Druid on an RPG server. I don’t really talk to anybody at all. The only thing is that I notice very few RPG servers and they’re always really full.

Having a lot of people isn’t bad, unless you are all competing for resources-- like herbs.

I have a very low level human rogue named Valerii on Thunderhorn. I tried to talk to “freeringtone” but got no answer. :frowning:

I’m on Doomhammer or Kel’Thuzad most of the time. I don’t really like Kel’Thuzad, but the PVP stuff isn’t too bad, so far.

I have no idea how to work those chat features. I tried all the slashes and all upper and lowercase ways. How do you talk to an individual person? When someone talks directly to me, I know how to reply.

Good thing I’m a loner or I’d be sad.

/t is a “tell”, chatting directly to another character/player.
/1, /2, /3, /4, etc are channel chat…when you first enter a zone you should get an announcement of the public chat channels in that zone, usually “1. General”, “2. Local Defense”, “3. Trade”, etc. General chat is just that…it’s zone-wide and totally public. Local defense is the channel where raids are announced, for instance if you’re in Elwynn Forest and a group of Horde players decide to raid Northshire (such bravery! ), Local Defense would say “Northshire is being attacked!” This is for folks who like to do Horde/Alliance situational PvP, as you can go over to that location and defend if you want to. Trade is for people trying to buy or sell from other players outside the Auction House (which, if you’ve ever been to Ironforge, is at least somewhat desirable…)

Typing /chathelp (I think) will give you a list of the slash commands.

Oh, and I’d just like to note that I’m also a loner, so I understand your feelings. The only time I’ve grouped in almost two months and about 12 alts worth of playing was to grab Oakenscowl with my NE druid alt in Teldrassil, way back when I started this thing.

Um are all your characters Alliance? That’d explain why we can’t find you. Burning Dog Legion is currently just Horde.

It’s not so bad. I like PvP because it is something to do beyond just do quests and kill monsters. A lot of abilities, like the Hunter’s Flare/Track Hidden or the human racial trait Perception are really handly in PvP.

Some places are hard to quest in, true- Hillsbrad is a constant zerg. But there are still plenty of areas that you can quest without getting griefers coming along. PvP gives a sense of danger in some areas beyond just monsters.

Just wanted to point out that “Freeringtone” would probably get kicked off of an RPG server. (Yeah, I know you said you would start a new character; just an FYI.) RPGers don’t just talk in character; they insist that everyone’s names are in character too and get upset at all OOC (Out Of Character) talk. Don’t go onto an RPG server and try to talk about movies or ball games for example. Most text shorthand (BRB, LOL, OMW, etc.) are also considered verbotten.

I haven’t played WoW but I was on an RPG server for DAoC for a while and those people were serious. Names had to be period and location accurate and some people even got upset if your clothing or equipment wasn’t “correct”. I got slammed once for saying “Hang on, dogs are barking. BRB.” I was informed (by several people) that I 1) should have used a private tell instead of local and 2) I left off my (( )). (Putting (( )) around your text on most RPG servers indicates that you are talking OOC.)

RPG servers can be fun, but some people do get a bit too anal about it.
