My friend ran Adaware and now his Internet Explorer and Aol instant messenger will not connected to the internet. We share a cable modem using a router, my internet connection works fine. We used winipcgf on his computer and renewed the IP address, so I know he is connected, but for some reason IE and AIM just will not connect. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Conti
Will any other internet apps work?
It killed my Kazaa Lite too.
Yep. Kazaa is full of adware, and will refuse to run if you remove it. Kazaa Lite is just Kazaa with the adware apps replaced with dummy files, but AdAware will still recognize them as spyware and remove them. This is why, when AdAware gives you the screen of detected files, you’re supposed to look at them first before clicking each one.
To the OP: Try deleting and re-installing IE. Probably some piece of spyware or adware changed your IE setup to use it as a proxy, and now with it gone IE won’t run.
No program will connect. I just tried to get Norton Antivirus to connect for virus updates and it could not find the server. His computer is definitley recognizing the router, however, because he has the proper IP address and hostname when viewed through WINIPCFG. Is it possible for a proxy to route all internet traffic though a certain file? If so, what system file would contain that information that redirects the traffic through the proxy?
What OS? If it’s XP, just go back to a prior restore point.
In IE, try going to the Tools menu, Internet Options, then the Connections tab. Click the LAN Settings button and see if a proxy is set up. I’m guessing you don’t need one, so if there’s one there, remove it, restart (not sure if that’s required or not, but it can’t hurt) and see what happens.
Thanks for all the tips people. I finally figured it out. One of the spyware programs changed the WINSOCK settings and Ad-aware failed to change the settings back after deleting the offending program. After using a WINSOCK repair program, everything is running smooth as silk.
Thanks again, Conti
That was it. Be sure you use the latest build of Ad-Aware – the earlier builds had that problem with certain spyware.
I think I just had the exact thing happen - my laptop (hand-me-down from my husband) had been having connectivity issues, and it stopped connecting entirely after running Spybot (and removing various spyware that had been on it from when he had it). How did you discover this was the issue, and what program did you use to fix it?
You might want to try fixing your winsock. See how it goes …if still no luck… try this exe fix.

The program I used can be found on the first link that Daizy posted. That is the exact website and program I used to figure out and fix the problem.
