Random Acts Of Learning on Wikipedia

When I’'m bored, caught up on email, read everything of interest here on the Dope, sometimes I’ll pop over to Wikipedia and click the “Random article” link.

Today I learned about William III of Cagliari, some dude in the 13th century, and Motivic integration which is a branch of mathematics. Another time I found the word “Gleeking” which is a particular way of spitting. Eminently useful term

What uncharted waters has Random Article lead you to?

I hit “random article,” too, but mostly to see how many clicks until I arrive at an article about European Football (average number of clicks: seven)

Gleeking is a functional and useful term. The fact that you didn’t know the term probably means that you don’t know how to do it and that is the real shame. I can and it is pretty cool but it takes a combination of tongue and front teeth work to make it happen. Spit can be precisely aimed in a fast stream through proper gleek technique.

My source for random info comes from our bathrooms here at work. I had no idea that people actually read the sports pages but you can walk all over this large building and someone, probably many people, leave just those in the bathrooms. It makes little sense to me but there were articles talking about Barry Bonds legacy over the past few days. You got lucky with Motivic integration.

I use the random button hardly at all. But just this weekend I learned about:
-the axolotl, a subterranean salamander
-the weta, Earth’s heaviest bug
-Elizabeth Hawes, a writer and clothing designer
-Ryan Crocker, US ambassador to Iraq
-the Curtiss O2C, the Navy scout biplane used in King Kong
-the crash of Comair flight 191 last year in Lexington, KY (they took the wrong runway)

Oh, I’m familiar with it, just didn’t know there was a term for it! That’s the neat part.

Just found out that only 3 films have won the “Big Five” Academy Awards (picture, director, writer, actor, actress): It Happened One Night, Silence Of The Lambs, and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.

The Teeming Millions will have always have planted their flag before the Wiki Bitches can.

Not found through the random button, but very satisfyingly random is the article on Action Park. If you have a spare 20 minutes it’s well worth a read!

My favourite bit (apart from the employee quotes) is their a water slide, with a complete loop, ALL enclosed.
