It is small and it is for many reasons, but I plan to continue to reduce my gas & oil usage. The problem here is that even if the US dramatically reduced our usuage and no longer imported oil, other countries will just step up and buy it instead.

What do you suggest we can do that would actually affect the situation?

If we tell them to shape up, they might ask their leaders to demonstrate more tolerance. More likely, they will cheer their leaders who stick it to the man. When they rise up in unison to praise intolerance, who is to say that they would not demonstrate the same dangerous anger toward us at some time in the future? There’s something we can do about that, from a strictly evolutionary standpoint.

You probably made the mistake of including one offhand word that allowed the PC police to go after you for that and ignore the barbarity of the act you were condemning. It does not take much, but **Silenus ** would appear to have avoiding this ‘pit trap’.

Really, obviously we are the corrupt descipacable ones. I don’t think the post provides very good evidence that any of those lables fit Silenus.

However, I do object to the content of his post. It is not okay to say things exhorting genocide. You (the one saying it) may understand yourself to be expressing passionate anger in a controlled circumstance which would never cause others to take the notion of genocide* seriously. But you do not know who your audience is, in any detail. And it is wrong to give anyone (even nutjobs) the impression that they live in a world where it is okay to encourage genocidal urges. This does each individual involved, and the society at large, a major disservice.

So I’m just going to write out this ticket and you can have a nice day. :wink:

So he’s suggestnig that an entire social group be exterminated, qua that social group. “Genocide” is not the right word by the dictionary definition, but by connotation, its right in the ballpark. There is probably a better word but it’s not coming to me.

And therein lies the problem. People want to say more about how offensive this is but don’t. They don’t want to offend, be called insensitive to the beliefs and practices of other cultures, don’t want to be called racist or xenophobes. They don’t want to be labeled as intolerant.

Bullshit. I thought that after 9/11 people would read about the lunacy of extremist Islam and be so outraged that they would rise up against the loons and round them all up. Nope. We ranted and raged and then went on our way.

I thought after Daniel Pearl was beheaded and the video was spread around the world that maybe we would go after these whacko’s and wipe them out. Nope. We talked for a little bit about how horrible it was, talk radio ranted and then it was brushed aside.

Wahabism is the prevailing teaching in our supposed ally, Saudi Arabia. We laugh at and denounce the Christian fundamentalists in this country and ridicule the Bible literalists, yet we say and do nothing about the Wahabist teachings that threaten peace throughout the world. The Saudis have the money to spend on spreading the word of their idea about what the “religion of peace” means and we do nothing to stop them because they have us by the gas tanks.

Enough! Because of our dependence on foreign oil we have to sit back and let them do whatever the hell they want, no matter how it disgusts us. We can’t keep an eye on Middle Eastern immigrants or mosques because it is considered profiling. If 9/11 had been committed by members of the IRA then I, as an American of Irish descent, would be screaming about how the IRA doesn’t represent me and I would have no problem with the feds profiling red-headed freckled guys named Murphy or targeting the St. Paddy’s Day parade.

Since we can’t get the Muslim communities to stand up and express their outrage at the perversion of their beliefs then the non-Muslim communities and countries should do it. Show the videos of these atrocities (floggings, beheadings, 9/11, terrorist rants) and don’t let it be forgotten. Don’t fold to political correctness. If the Muslim groups won’t police themselves then we will have to do it for them.

Now I will sit back and wait for everyone to pile on me and tell me that I am insensitive, racist, offensive, bigoted and a Nazi.

I will go on record as saying.

I would be quite happy if every enforcer of Sharia law did meet an early death.
I would be quite happy if every Neo-Nazi did.
I would be quite happy if every KKK member did.

I don’t believe anything I just posted could be confued with genocide any more than Der Trihs’s crazy rants about US soldiers. You might not agree, with my sentiments, but they are a far cry from genocide as is Silenus wishing wistfully for the wood chipper death of the “Saudi Arabia’s judges and Islamic law advocates”. That is a professional group and not a race or religion.

As far as the hypothetical audience, bullshit, they are responsible for their actions. Not posters on a message board. If they were prone to go on a killing spree or become the next Hitler, I hardly think Silenus’ post will be the catalyst that pushes them over.

Interestingly enough, Saudi Arabia is one of the states that is a party to the Convention against Torture - I guess 7,000 lashes isn’t torture. 7,100, on the other hand…
