I check the forums in this order typically:

GQ.
MPSIMS.
Pit.
IMHO.
ATMB.
GD.
Comments on Colums.
Comments on SD Staff Answers.

GD would be higher on the list if there were ongoing topics I felt I could contribute to.

All the rest serve their purpose which is primarily to keep GQ free of crap.

But without GQ, there’d be no SDMB (for me at least)

I have mine bookmarked on two different computers on The Pit and GD.

  1. Pit
  2. GD
    4-6) IMHO, GQ, and MPSIMS (I check them all quite a bit, but there are so many new threads going all the time, it just goes by in a blur. Order there depends on the mood I’m in.)

Naturally, you can’t consider this a scientific survey because, it being in one of the forum biases it towards people who frequent that forum. I’m guessing you knew that already.

It always depends on what I’m involved with, of course. If there’s a debate (usually a Gun Debate :D) going on in GD, I always check there first. If there’s a heated argument going on in the Pit, I always check there first.

However, his my listing of the forums, and I’ll tell you why:

  1. The Pit: It’s a lot more “real-world” than the other forums, and you don’t have to keep yourself in check as much.

  2. Great Debates: I love to debate. There’s a lot of merit to a calm, rational discussion.

  3. MPSIMS: Sometimes, you just gotta throw all rationality to the wind and act goofy.

  4. ATMB: It’s nice seeing what’s going on in the bowels of the Straight Dope…

  5. GQ: Aside from being named after a popular men’s fashion magazine (j/k), it’s also the place to get the Straight Dope pretty quick. Sort of the SD Express.

  6. IMHO: Great Debates, Jr. This is at the bottom of my list, since I’ve got a personal vendetta against it… I was pissed off when my “Enterprise vs. Star Destroyer” thread was moved here (and the moderator of IMHO is mean to me :D)

The two Comments forums I rarely visit, so I’m not ranking them. Perhaps I should drop by there more often.

They’re like children in a family. Rating is beside the point. Each serves their role.

GQ - The worker bee - The oldest child. Not as amusing as the others but definitely the hardest working (and a little anal too). Will be a scientist or policy analyst.

MPSIMS - The touchy feely kid. Will become a therapist but lose license for getting too “involved” with patient. Will write best selling book “Men Who Post Too Much and The Women Who Leave Them”.

Pit - The black sheep - tries and abandons Goth lifestyle - sells drugs - a piercing a week - manages an industrial rock and roll band - will be the richest as head of porn video empire.

IMHO - Lawyer then politician. Loses office after ending affair with intern and telling her “her ass is too fat”. She calls plus size victim hotline and after counseling with MPSIMS decides to expose affair “to let the healing begin”.

ATMB. - 30 years old. Part time employee at record shop and lives at home in parents basement. 'Nuff said.

GD. Will follow the Lord and then get de-frocked for… well…you know.

Comments on Columns. - Postal Worker. A little edgy during Christmas but nothing to be worried about.

Comments on SD Staff Answers. - Animal Control Worker and totally fulfilled by job.

GQ (I’m contributing more and more, lately. Although I’m usually out of my depth in there, I’m afraid ;))
The Pit (There’s nothing like a little flaming to start the day)
ABTMB (Sadly, almost for the same reasons as the Pit. It’s where a lot of idiots seem to reside, for some reason)
IMHO (No offence, but this forum never really made sense to me, although some of the topics appeal to me. But in the end, it’s just MPSIMS II to me)

GD (The problem with 99% of the debates is that they are pointless: I’m not gonna convince ANYONE to change his mind. Maybe people learn something out of it, but it’s not for me, generally)

Although I I usually start at the Pit and work my way up, skipping COMB&SR and CoCC usually.

Frequently visited, in loose order:
The Pit - who doesn’t enjoy a good rant?
GQ - Facts, factoids, postulations, and speculations.
IMHO - everyone has an opinion…
MPSIMS - Fun fluff.
GD - Sometimes interesting, but the posturing can be annoying. Also, hard to maintain my interest level to read all 278 posts in a thread I haven’t seen before.
