RE: Was Boston once literally flooded with molasses?

There can be no doubt as to the veracity of the flooding of portions of the city of Boston by the prime ingredient of rum (damn, that’s a lot of ‘ofs’ in a sentence). I do, however, believe that Cecil may have struck upon an interesting avenue of thought. In 1918-19, a significant feature in the Boston Harbor was a large cylindrical object containing 2.3 million gallons of a sweet byproduct of sugar refining. Eventually, due to gross negligence and pure, unadulterated stupidity, scores of people were killed and injured due to structural failure. This is a given. I need not (nor do I wish to) go into the details of failure analysis for the molasses storage facility in this space. That’s not the point. though. The point is the Red Sox. Yep. The Curse. As payment for the 1918 win in the World Series, the gods of America’s Pastime seem to have exacted a Price from the City of Boston. So, now in 2005, what do I fear is the Price? Let’s take an objective look at what could be seen as a “whimsical” suggestion. In 1918, USIA ended up paying what in today’s money would be around six and a half million dollars in damages. Today, a disaster isn’t news until it’s in the billions. Then, twenty one dead and 150 injured was bad (read newsworthy). Now, say, 650 dead and 2800 hundred injured would have an equal impact (completely arbitrary numbers, bytheway). Then, when an “engineer” witnessed a lack of structural integrity, the answer was camouflage. Now… well the same thing. The parallels are striking between a simple tank for storing molasses and a fignificant feature under the Boston Harborstill cylindical with the exception of being the opposite of 1918. The Big Dig has (an inverse of 1918) most of the fluid, in this case a salty brine mostly made of seawater, on the outside. Now, I know what you’re going to say. Political. No. Not really. More than 1400 leaks have been found in the the tunnel. Answer? Ignore it. Pretend everything is fine. Is there a disaster brewing? Well… The Sox did win the World Series… Finwick, Boston, MA.

As if I weren’t spooked enough already at the thought of driving through the Big Dig tunnels!!!

A trifling price to pay for a World Series win.
(That is, presuming you mean 2800 injured, not 2800*100=280,000.)
