This is the ugliest layout I’ve seen anywhere.
Don’t think for a minute they will change it just to please us!
It sucks.
The Thread Tools drop-down box doesn’t seem to be working, Subscribe to this thread, specifically. Is that right?
The board now takes 3-4 times longer(at least!) to load for me.
I think the new setup is alot more functional, it does not look as good but I like have having more room for the post. Having the info for the poster on top of the post is really nice. Having the location back would be nice also though. Post count on the post is great.
appreciate the work in progress, don’t wish to join throngs of folks bitching and all, but on a serious note the font size is a very real issue to me (and I would suspect any of those w/visual problems). I can barely read it, as a matter of fact this is my first response since the changeover.
apparently selecting “largest” in the browser window doesn’t do anything.
hoping that the ‘font size’ is something that folks intend to do something about, or if not, is there a work around that I can do on my own 'puter to assist ???
thanks ever so
I haven’t seen anyone comment on this yet, but I may have missed it. I’m sorry if this has been asked…
But what’s the deal with this archive? Was there always an archive and we just didn’t have access to it? It seems like it would be a big drain on resources, but maybe not.
I just noticed an interesting feature - If a thread gets closed all oportunities to reply/post in it are removed, unlike the old vb where it would allow you to submit, only to get a message that it was closed. It was often not easy to tell if something had been closed.
What OS and browser are you using ? What’s your screen resolution?
A temp fix could be (on windows): Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display/Settings/Advanced/General/DPI Setting. Set it to a % higher than 100%. Please note that this will affect font sizes outside the browser as well, and might be irritating.
No, I think it’s simpler than that. I’m not an IE user, but I’ve heard it said often enough that I believe it, that IE only allows you to resize fonts when they’re specificed certain ways. You can’t resize a font which is specified in absolute units, like points, picas, inches, or cms, but you can resize when they’re specified in relative units, like ems, exes, or percents. The text here is specified as 10pt.
I like the new look very much. I especially like the fact that I can see the first few lines of the original post, but that is the source of my first complaint: it disappears before I finish reading. I am a fairly fast reader, so I assume this happens to most people. My second complaint is that I have to choose not to have emails sent whenever I post. That should be the default (or at least should be my default).
That’s part of your Options, in your User CP.
thanks for the response. OS =Windows 98 (yea, I know, I’m poor); Browser = “internet explorer” (which is where I’ve gone in the past to make the print bigger Views-text size - largest)
Tried the fix you suggested, got allthe way to General, but there was nothing I could click on/check off/nudge/ alter to change the DPI setting (which was set at 96%). I appreciate the effort though.
If you’re willing and have the HD space to try a different browser wring, you might download Opera. It has a drop-down menu that’s on by default to change how zoomed-in you are on a website. The percentages range from 20% to 1000% and will increase the font sizes to as big as you want them to be. Of course, everything else will be big too.
Yes, pretty much any browser except IE will allow you to resize the font just fine, and pretty much any browser except Opera will do it without the ad banner.
thanks, I’ll “see” what I can do.
If you move to another post, and then move back to the one you were reading the hintbox will come back.
The sending of e-mails is in your options. mine is off by default.
The functionality is much better but much preferred the old look - I see not need for a, what, 24 pt font for the poster name, nor which number post it is in the thread. All too often the blue bits introducing the post take up more screen that the post itself.
If I had to vote for one thing to change - please please please reintroduce the location of the poster, it helped many debates to get an instant idea of the probably nationality of the poster - especially in great debates. This vote is now just because my location is unusual, honest!
Second vote would be to allow you to set the miscellaneous option defaults which still seems to be down for me at least.
You can also slide the mouse slowly and continuously along the text and the box will stay up. It does on my PC anyways.
Saw the changes yesterday - MUCH BETTER! Hooray for Straight Dope!!!
 They’ve changed the layout (Choose ‘straight dope’ from the ‘Quickstyle chooser’)
I wonder how long that’s been there.
While it doesn’t resemble the old Straight dope it is cool. As long as it fills the screen I am not too fussy.
