Reading the newspaper in the presence of cats

My cat never interrupts whilst I read the newspaper – probably because I don’t take a newspaper. She makes up for it, however, by interrupting me at other times.
I just ended a five-minute session of petting her whilst she lay on the study floor. What she really wants, I think, is for me to follow her to the back door and let her out. However, it’s raining cats and dogs here (so to speak) as I write, and I don’t think that the situation will benefit by my adding another cat.
Oh, darn, she’s rubbing against my legs and meowing again. Time for some more petting, I guess.
