I went over this in my previous thread, however it got a little heated and the discussion went purely into to my specific tastes in porn. I want to avoid that and focus on realism in porn, and why it is almost always non-existent.

Bryan Ekers brought up a an argument to counter my desire for realism in porn.

I find his scenario offending. No, not because I’m skeeved out by the idea of people fantasizing about schoolgirls. I honestly don’t give a shit what people fantasize about, so long as it stays in their brain and they don’t harm others to achieve them. What offends me is that scenarios like this are often in porn, but they can never be realistic.

First off, this “schoolgirl” has to be 18 by law, but is probably around 22. Second she acts and talks like a schoolgirl, but is wearing a “sexy” schoolgirl outfit. Why does the outfit have to be so over the top when she’s going to take it off anyway? But the most offending part, is that we’re supposed to believe that this 22 year old woman is actually a 13 year old girl. I’m sorry, but I just can’t trick my brain into thinking this.

“Hey brain, I know you think this is bullshit, but consider this. Girls are maturing more quickly these days. They look older and older every year. And yeah, lots of 13 year olds are getting breast implants. It’s very common. So just sit back and enjoy the show.”

What’s worse than this scenario is the “cheerleader” fantasy. You know what I’m talking about. You get two 25 year old girls. Give them pigtails, blush, and “freckles” created by a black sharpie. They will often have awkward childlike smiles or sometimes even braces. Then you dress them up in mismatching “sexy” cheerleader outfits, and they’re either wearing no underwear, or thongs. Thank you Scorsese for putting all that effort and attention to detail to create this fantasy.

What pisses me off about this type of fantasy is that it actually can be realistic without that much effort. Show us two high school seniors that just turned 18. They don’t have to be 18, they just have to look 18. Show them in a locker room by themselves. Show them in real cheerleader outfits, and real cheerleader underwear, and real cheerleader socks & shoes. Give them actual haircuts and makeup that most 18 year old girls have. Make them actually talk and act like 18 year olds. Even though it’s been a while since high school, I still know what cheerleaders looked and acted like.

From here, it’s the realism and attention to detail that puts you right into the scene. For me, at least, it makes everything more exciting and more intense. You no longer have to fill in the gaps mentally, and you can enjoy the ride. And this is what drives me crazy. If you’re going to force me to mostly use my imagination to make the fantasy work, then why did you even bother? Why am I paying you for this “fantasy”? I could just as easily lie in my bed and masturbate to one of my realistic fantasies for free.

So, what do you guys think? Realism in porn, Yea or Nay?

heh A few years ago I wrote a rant on this topic. Salient points copied and pasted here for your reading pleasure (some of my points are related more to photographic porn than to video porn):

1 - What is the deal with all these models in hardcore scenes grinning at the camera while they’re having sex? The woman is going down on the man, with her head turned to stare into the camera. The woman is mounted up on top of the man, staring at the camera. The woman is in some awkward, ridiculous position, getting screwed, with her neck craned in a really uncomfortable-looking way to leer at the camera. Note to the directors: STOP IT! This is not sexy or arousing! At best, it makes it look like the woman is completely detached from what’s happening. Like the man is nothing more than a prop. At worst, it makes it look like the woman is laughing at the viewer: “HA HA! You’ll never get to do this!” This is even worse in a spanking or BDSM scene - looking at the camera makes the whole scene look even more fake than it already is. If you’re paying attention to the camera, you’re not paying attention to your partner.

2 - At the opposite extreme, what is up with women (and men) in these scenes who have their eyes closed in every single photo? It looks as if they don’t even want to be there. Closed eyes do not make you look more passionate! Closed eyes make it look like you’re thinking “This isn’t really happening. If I don’t look at him, then I don’t really have a cock in my mouth.” And just like looking at the camera, closed eyes make it look as if your partner might as well not be there - you’re simply masturbating with a living dildo.

3 - Facials. Ladies, if you’re going to accept payment for getting your faces blasted with cum, on camera, at least try to look like you’re enjoying it. I’m sorry, but it’s ridiculous when you smilingly and enthusiastically blow a guy, looking like you’re eager to coax out his load, and then when the moment arrives you screw your eyes shut, clamp your mouth shut and put on a look of absolute disgust as the stuff lands on your face. And then you smile afterward. sigh

4 - Sex positions. I remember in the late '80s and early '90s, porn directors seemed to be obsessed with “doggy-style”, and it got a bit tiresome. Now, they’ve fallen in love with a different position, The Reverse Cowgirl: woman on top, facing the man’s feet. I am seeing this over and over and over and over. So maybe this is a question for the ladies - does facing his feet when you’re fucking him provide a drastically more intense sensation than what you get by facing his head? Or is this one of those positions that serves no real purpose other than providing a better view for the camera? Either way, it’s getting old. Speaking for myself, when I have sex, I want to see my partner’s face. I want to watch her breasts moving. I want to see her reactions and her arousal.

5 - Lesbians. Hey, I enjoy lesbian scenes as much as the next guy. But is it too much to ask the producers to find actual lesbians or bisexual models for these scenes? Models who will actually perform oral sex on another woman, as opposed to striking poses that make it look as if they’re about to do it, any minute now?

6 - “Teen” models. It is very obvious by now that it is not difficult to find 18-19 year old models to pose nude. So why do porn producers still persist in taking a 27-year-old model with huge, obviously fake tits that sag to her navel, putting her hair up in pigtails and calling her a “teen”? And how about “cheerleaders”? Many “cheerleader” scenes I’ve seen simply defy logic. For example, an alleged high school football quarterback, in uniform, getting busy with three alleged high school cheerleaders. And the three cheerleaders are all wearing different uniforms. Last time I checked, there are only two teams on the field in any football game. So even assuming that the quarterback is nailing his own cheerleader as well as his opponent’s, where did this third girl come from? Shouldn’t she be in the locker room at a different stadium? And shouldn’t at least one of these cheerleaders be wearing colors that match the colors of the quarterback’s uniform?

I think it was New Wave Hookers IV that had a scene where two women are doing each other in a fancy hotel room and decide they need some men. So they call room service and order a “gaggle of quacking duck men”. Four men arrive shortly thereafter, all wearing full-head duck masks, and take turns doing the women, managing to keep up a steady quacking throughout the entire scene. Hilarious, and strangely erotic.

Nay to too much realism. Porn is escapism, I can see real anywhere. To me half the fun is letting my mind fill in the details or just not worrying about the ‘real life’ details and enjoying.

Meh. I can deal with all the playactin in porn.Some of my favourites are prisoner/slave scenes. I’m fairly confidentent the “slaves” are let got once they turn the camera off.

I just hate the ones where no one really seems to be haveing any fun.

That’s not what I mean by realism. Of course with any porno (at least legal porn) you know it’s all acting. I mean I’d probably enjoy sex scenes like that too, but if it was a real, honest to god snuff film, then I’d be sick to my stomach.

By realistic fantasy, I simply mean something that is extremely convincing. For the duration of the video, you’re sucked into the world.

Honestly, I’d be very interested in “Elf Porn”, if you could convince me I was in Middle Earth and the film was directed by Peter Jackson.

It would be easier for me to believe a woman is an elf, rather than a 22 year old is actually 9 years younger simply by wearing some silly outfit. I think this is why so many people couldn’t stand 90210. Gabrielle Carteris was a 29 year old playing a 16 year old.

I think the reason porn is not up to the standards of, say, LOTR is mostly because of budget. How many millions of dollars did LOTR have to create costumes and special effects and tons of editing? How much money do you think is put into your average porno? I will grant you it is a little distracting and A LOT hilarious when the actress is in 1645 England but has clear stripper heels and 4 inch purple finger nails but really the large majority of men just want to see a girl’s hoo-ha. Anything other than that is probably considered a bonus. I’m a chick though so I can’t speak for men in this instance.

Oh, yes. I’m actually looking for silly or funny porn myself, or something where the performers actually seem to be enjoying themselves. It’s deadly dull when they look like they’d rather be anywhere else.

I don’t know how much more realistic I want porn to be, though. Perhaps some actual cunnilingus, instead of either none at all, or that weird porno way they seem to do it.

Well obviously spending 100 million on a porno would be financial suicide. I’m just saying, how much more money would it really cost to make these girls look like cheerleaders? Can’t you order the outfits, underwear, socks and shoes online?

I feel like a lot of the time it’s over the top on purpose. People need to tell themselves, “I’m just watching a porn” instead of “I’m in the room with actual cheerleaders, watching them go at it”.

I guess I’ll just never understand why some people don’t prefer realism. When I watch TV, watch movies, or play video games, I always prefer the experience to be as real as possible, while removing the negative side effects of real life. So in a video game the user should have the freedom to run over strippers and shoot cops, yet not have the tedium of going to the bathroom or doing laundry. And this should all be presented in the most realistic way that technology allows us.

Male porn stars: SHUT THE FUCK UP!

I can’t enjoy anything where these guys are going, UUHH, OH YEAH, OH FUCK, AWW YEAH literally every five seconds. And in the most fake, put-on, dorky sounding voices ever. How do these guys even take themselves seriously? How do the girls they’re nailing not break out laughing?

I’ve never seen any old porn from the 70s - did John Holmes make this much annoying noise during his scenes? Did the guys back then do this apelike grunting act?

It’s obvious during a lot of porn scenes that the women aren’t enjoying it - the moaning and screaming sounds so fake it’s absolutely ridiculous. I guess a lot of the guys in porn probably aren’t enjoying it either. They probably liked it when they first started, then at some point they just started going through the motions with the fake moaning and grunting.

I have a theory for this. Basically, 90% of the people who are fucking in these scenes are having a horrible time. If they didn’t over-act then they would simply have blank, dull looks on their faces.

This is how the porn face came into play. Instead of looking like lifeless zombies, the girls would put on the “sexy face”. You know, where the mouth is either half open or the lips are puckered. Then the intense eyes, and obvious moans even when the girl isn’t even being touched. The girls do this because it’s so easy to fake.

It’s very distracting in porn for the same reason a fake smile is distracting in a picture. It’s trying to replace something very beautiful with something unnatural.

That’s kind of the essential dilemma here. We’re taking an incredibly subtle and individual human experience and turning it into a commodity. It’s dehumanizing because it has to be.

My take on the whole porn industry is that you have to suspend reality to have a marketable product. Reality just isn’t all that pretty for most people and porn gives an opportunity to watch the life of a stud muffin and his harem of silicone-enhanced beauties. Most men and women don’t look like porn stars with their clothes off so the porn industry is selling fantasy, not reality.

I can see your point. However I don’t watch that much porn, I would actually rather read an erotic story. When I do watch it, it’s for the sex. That’s really about all that interests me about it. I don’t care that watching three guys get it on in ‘uniform’ while sitting on a bunk don’t look anything like they’re in the military and it’s obviously a set. They’ve set a basic scene and it’s 3 hot guys going at it. That’s really all I want out of my porn.

Well, I don’t think it has to stay that way.

One thing to realize is that the USA produces around 90% of the world’s porn. Once you understand this you start to see why porn is how it is. What is the one thing all of America is still afraid of (or at least tells us we should be afraid of)? Sex. We’re still taught to be ashamed of nudity. Still taught that sex is a very private act between two loving individuals. Etc.

Right now the motto is “once you do porn, there’s no going back”. I think once we get out of this slump (if that ever happens) people won’t be as ashamed of making porn. Sex doesn’t have to be sacred, so screwing this guy for money on film doesn’t mean you’ll burn in hell. This will open up the doors for up & coming actors/actresses who need work experience. Not only will we have people working in porn who are better at acting, but they won’t be ashamed so they can actually enjoy it.

Obviously modern film is at this stage. That’s why you can be 100% convinced that what you’re watching is real, even though deep down you know it is fake.
