Really bad, geeky, uncool songs you absolutely love

Pfft. Dolly did it better. And she did it first.

And better! Thanks, jayjay.

I love most of these songs, and, in fact, most pop from the 70s and 80s. I have to agree with Tangent, though; just by virtue of its subject, One Night in Bangkok is the geekiest song ever. OTOH, the fact that someone wrote a pop song about chess makes it one of the coolest* songs ever. (Also, Safety Dance is very cool, not geeky at all.)

To this list I have to add:

Cherish - Kool and the Gang
Love Will Keep Us Together - Captain and Tenille
And one that would make anyone’s uncool list, and which I am more than a little ashamed to admit that I secretly like: I’ve Never Been to Me by Charlene.

Thank God. I have always seen I’ve Never Been to Me by Charlene put in the short-list of worst song ever - and I also enjoy listening to it…

It reminds me of the 5th grade slumber party when we all sang it together…(sniff) good times!

Re: I’ve Never Been To Me, when Agent Mitzi Elrond is lip-synching this song at the beginning of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and gets the bottle thrown at him when he finishes? He deserved it just for performing to this song. nods

I want it that way - BACKSTREET BOYS (I’m so ashamed).

Tell me why…ohhhhhh, tell me why…

I like most of the music of the 60s that’s considered seminal, or important for whatever reason by rock historians. But I also like some of the other music from the era that tends to be universally sneered at today. I’m talking about all those one-hit wonder songs like “Liar Liar” (by The Castaways). And Question Mark And The Mysterians, who brought us the classic “96 Tears”. Others include:

Cherry Baby by Neil Diamond (his only song that I actually do like)
Time Won’t Let Me by the Outsiders
In The Year 2525 by Zager and Evans
Several songs by The Seeds, on the theme of having a good time
and more…

I like lots of the songs mentioned here, and I’ll add a bunch of Bon Jovi tunes from the late '80s/early '90s.

“Bird House In Your Soul” by They Might Be Giants.

“She Blinded Me With Science” - Thomas Dolby

Anything by the Four Seasons or Neil Diamond
but I just love S-a-t-u-r-d-a-y Night by the Bay City Rollers

Just the Girl U Want - Devo

Make a Circuit With Me - The Polecats
I’ll be a diode, cathode, electrode, overload
Generator, oscillator
Make a circuit with me

And another vote for She Blinded Me With Science

Oh, and what about The Joker by Steve Miller?

I have always been ashamed to admit my fondness for Love Shack by the B52s – a truly inane song by possibly the geekiest band in history. And yet I like it.

TIIIIIN ROOF, RUSTED!

Mine:

-Guinastasia’s selection
-most of Roxette’s songs.

Ilsa Lund–Elvis Costello? Uncool? Never!

Small Clanger–Kimberely Rew, guitarist for Katrina and the Waves and writer of “Walking on Sunshine,” was the guitarist for the Soft Boys. Therefore, Katrina and the Waves cannot be considered uncool.

ice ice baby!

angel of the morning (merilee rush)

Bonzo goes to Bitburg

Dead Ringer(Meatloaf & Cher)

I Gotcha by Joe Tex

Dancin Queen

Did i mention Ice Ice Baby?

Yes, another vote here for Roxette.

“Listen to your heart…when he’s calling for you…”
