really crappy songs you like (guilty pleasures?)

Here in SF, KFOG FM has a little feature they call 10 at 10.
usually it’s 10 songs from a given year, or 10 songs of a given theme. anyway, each friday the 13th they do “hits from hell”, basically the 10 crappiest songs chosen by the internet public.

Tonights songs were:

Eddie Murphy - Party All the Time
Cher - Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves
Taco - Puttin’ On the Ritz
Gerardo - Rico Suave
Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods - Billy Don’t Be a Hero
Warrant - Heaven
Rupert Holmes - Pina Colada Song
Los Del Rio - Macarena
Paper Lace - The Night Chicago Died
Captain & Tennille - Muskrat Love

Anyway, when they started bagging on “gypsies, tramps and thieves”, my thought was ‘come on, it aint that bad… i actually like that song!’

Even tho i know its ridiculous crap, i like it.

Then i got to thinking. I also liked “mmmbop”. I like Neil Diamond’s “America”. I like the monkees’ “i’m a believer”. And Bon Jovi’s “Shot thru the heart” is listenable to me.

Anyway, gimme expamples of songs that you know are crap, but like regardless.

Oh, this is so easy. Although I know if I sat here and thought about it for a while, I’m sure I love a whole list of embarrassing songs, I don’t have to sit and think. One obvious example leaps to mind.

I like Britney Spears songs. I’m 29, and I sing along to them in the car.

I’m a fan of Abba. I like the A-teens too. shudder

Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve met the one person who actually likes “Muskrat Love.”

As far as crappy songs, I suppose “I Get Lost (in your eyes)” by Debbie Gibson counts. I really like the melody even though the lyrics are pretty insufferable:

“I get lost/
in your eyes/
And I feel/
My spirits rise/
And soar like the wind/
Is this love that I am in?”

I have to keep in mind that: a) she was something like 14 when she wrote this song; and b) it’s still a helluva lot better than I could do. I can’t even play chopsticks.

Hey, I like some of those songs! I even went through the trouble of downloading a Paper Lace - The Night Chicago Died from Napster!

From the list quoted above, I also like:

Puttin’ on the Ritz
Heaven
Piña Colada Song
Macarena

What else? How’s aboot…

Nena: 99 Luftballoons
Men Without Hats: Safety Dance
Reunion: Life is a Rock
Tony Basil: Hey Mickey

That’s just the short list of what all I’ve downloaded so far…

::searches over Napster playlist and shudders::

“Bye Bye Bye” by NSync
“The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins” by William Shatner
“Fernando” by Abba

Oh yeah, my friends laugh at me when I say I like country music and/or Ace of Base.

When no one is around, I will sing along to the following:

“Shiny Happy People” by REM
“Kokomo” by the Beach Boys
“Hot Hot Hot” by Buster Pointdexter

Another Muskrat Love story from San Francisco.
KSJO was having this charity thing going on where you called to request a song, but you had to pledge $5 or whatever to whatever charity they were sponsoring. And they promised they’d play whatever was requested. Now KSJO is basically a metal station. So amongst the Ozzy Osbourbes and Metallicas, someone requested Muskrat Love, and damned if they didn’t play it.
About ten minutes later, they aired a caller who pledged $100 if they promised never to play that song ever again.

As for my guilty musical pleasure - I can’t get enough of Easy Like Sunday Morning by the Commodores.

Thanks to my beloved and now our children I know the words to too many Britney Spears songs as well as other catchy little dance numbers. I can’t say that I like them as they are like static in my head drowning out other better things.
Maybe that’s why so many people do enjoy them.

Now, Muskrat Love… that must be one of the greatest songs of all time.

Should I feel guilty because I like listening to Lyle Lovett?

Too easy, too easy… I used to only like good music. I listened to classical through the 80’s and successfully avoiding pop crap.

Then I came to school. And met my friends, game over boys and girls.

Abba
99 Luftballoons
Wham
Queen
Journey
Juice Newton

I hate my life.

AC/DC -“For Those About to Rock” or I think that’s what it’s called. I almost caused a car wreck because I was alternately singing as loud as I could and giggling like an idiot to that song on the radio.

I like My Heart Will Go On, by Celine Dion. Shoot me now.

I also like various broadway soundtracks which not too many people like, but the hell with them, because I do.

Also, Hanson is not too bad either.

“Dancing Queen” by ABBA is one of my favorite songs. I’m only admitting this because no one here knows me personally. I can remain safely, wretchedly anonymous.

And when you get the chance…
You are the Dancing Queen, young and sweet,
only seventeen,
Dancing Queen, feel the beat from the tambourine
oh yeah…

Damn, where’s that CD?

I about fell off my chair when I saw this. I don’t know what to say.

Mu personal picks:
“Lucky”-Britney Spears. It’s getting overplayed now, so I don’t like it so much anymore.
“Only In My Dreams”- Debbie Gibson. I keep thinking I’m over this song. Then I hear it on the radio again and the beat gets me. Everytime.

Abso-freakin-lutely not! How did Lyle get into a bad song thread anyway? Shame on you!

What’s the definition of “crappy”? What makes it crappy? Is it the lyrics or the music? Who decides? Sounds pretty elitist to me.

My kids used to groan when I’d turn the volume high and play La Paloma Blanca, Don’t Pull Your Love Out On Me, Baby, and Hold on Tight. Over and over.

This one was done by Leonard Nimoy, not William Shatner.

Yeah, I know. According to my Napster thingy though, it lists both Leonard Nimroy and William Shatner.

The only one I have in my Napster library at the moment is Soft Cell “Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go”.

I also like Cartman’s rendition of “Come Sail Away”.

“Henry the Eighth” by Herman’s Hermits.

Oh sweet Pea, won’t you dance with me, won’t you, won’t you, won’t you dance with meee.
