Poor UncleBeer…time for another redhead to check in.
I used to have hair past my waist. Didn’t get it cut at ALL until I was 11. Then got it cut progressively shorter until it was chin-length. Since I have REALLY thick hair, this meant it stuck out about a foot on each side. (And no, you can’t see the pictures.)
So I let it grow again…and got sick as hell of taking care of it. I can’t blowdry it, of that would be all I ever did in life. So now I’ve given up on long hair, and have it cut in layers around my face. Longest one is almost to the bottom of my neck in the back. Plus, it’s red and curly…and damn easy to take care of now. (Still with us, UncleBeer?)

Long hair is ok if you take care of it. I saw a woman in a restaurant with hair down to her knees. She was flipping it all the time and had a look of “wow! I’m so hot because I have long hair!” Her hair looked like hell. I could tell that it hasn’t seen a scissors in years and was extremely uneven and was plain gross. My scissors hand was twitching.
I’ve found that most (not all) people with long hair freak if you have the nerve to suggest to cut more than half an inch off. “It took me years to get it to this length!” “You’ll cut it all off if you do that!”. Newsflash: hair grows back!
I should mention that I used to have hair past my waist. I like it much better at the length it is now.
Gosh, I didn’t know that there were so many of us redheads out there! FTR, mine isn’t “carrot-top” red, it’s auburn.

It can take a long time, though. Also, mis-communications between hair stylists and their clients are notorious. Add to that the fact that people who have really long hair have a lot of time invested in it, and may be inclined to get a little obsessed with it, and you have a recipie for disaster in the stylist’s chair.
Aha! So here’s the thread where Unc expresses his pathological thing for redheads!
I used to have long red hair. Now I have shortish red hair. Collar-length. Just got it cut a month or so ago. It was getting to be a bit of a hassle, since I have two small children, a job outside my home, and not much time to fuss over my hair. The cut I’ve got now is actually very nice, and I like it alot. Flattering, easy to maintain, and not a one-style-only thing.
Oh yeah, I forgot to actually say something about the topic.
Men did like my hair long, but I’ll tell you what, this particular style got me a lot of compliments. From men. It was weird. Usually the only man that will compliment a woman on her hairstyle is either a)her hairdresser or b)her husband. Men all over the place where I work were telling me how nice it looked.
I don’t have a particular thing about hair on men, as long as it’s clean and looks good on that particular guy. No real color preference, or style preference. Bald is fine too (most of the men in my family are either bald or balding, so a bald man is familiar to me).
I will admit, though, that long hair on a man, well, it does make me look twice, in an appreciative manner. My husband has long, thick, curly dark hair. But he’s a musician, and it’s the law, you know.
Hair is just a covering for the brain. While good hair is nice, it’s what’s underneath that really counts.
Ok a man checking in here.
I generally think long hair, looks too much like the flat long hair of the 70’s and don’t like it for that reason. If it is styled nice (And poofed up is always a plus :)) then long hair is wonderful. But it seems too hard to style long hair everyday. So in short. Chin length is best!
I’ve had short hair on and off, and had the same problem Falcon had (I called it Mushroom Head). Most unfortunate. Also, when my hair was short, I had to wash it every day, and couldn’t nap on it or I’d have to start all over.
With it long, I wash about once every 5 days because I use a lot less styling products (none), and I only brush it once a day. Usually it’s up in a twist, knot, bun, ponytail, or something, prep time is minimal. As a bonus, my hair will not tangle, so for me, long is easier.
Also men seem to prefer long hair.
“But it seems too hard to style long hair everyday.”
No it’s not; it’s a snap! I can put my hair up in a minute or two, and can even do it without a mirror. Plus, I don’t have to blow-dry or curl it, and I don’t have to get it trimmed every five minutes. And if it gets rained on, I can just brush it out and put it back up!
I mean, Jiminy, look at the elaborate hairstyles 19th and early 20th century women wore, and they still managed to get a lot done!
Mary Ann, you would have LOVED to have seen my hairstylist’s face when I had her cut ALL of my long hair off when I was about 20. (It was down to my butt at the time- I actually got a boy-short cut. Shaved in the back and on the sides). She begged me not to until I got up and said I would just go somewhere else or hack it myself. It felt great! I loved it!
I too hate women who grow their hair but never cut it. It looks ragged and awful! My sister pulled this and I literally made her cut about 4 inches of dead yukky hair off of her long style. It looks great now- much better. I get mine cut about every 6 weeks- maybe 3/4 to an inch off. I find it grows in spurts, but averages about an inch a month.
Love is like popsicles…you get too much you get too high.
My point was that if you have long hair, and only get about 1/2 an inch (just for an example) cut off, it’s still going to be long! Why does that little bit cause so much trauma?
It can take a long time, though. Also, mis-communications between hair stylists and their clients are notorious. I see your point about miscommunications. I guess I forget that happens because I don’t ever cut without clarifying how much I’m going to cut off. I have learned that when people tell me to cut whatever is needed then I’d better SHOW them what is needed first and not just go to it (no, I didn’t learn that by experience. I learned by the clients reaction when I tell them my intentions).
One time a yong girl came in wanting a trim. She hadn’t had it cut in 5 years and one side was about 6 inches longer than the other. She didn’t want more than an inch off but it had to be even. Well, obviously I couldn’t do that and she complained to my manger because I couldn’t do that. My manager tried to explain why what she wanted wasn’t do-able but she wouldn’t listen and brought in her mother to complain! I just shake my head over the way some people can be so obssessed about their hair and how they can refuse to listen.
I love long hair on a woman. It’s fun to play with while cuddling. But the thing I really like about hair is red hair. Just reading about all the gals with long red hair was enough to make me wish I knew you better.
My girlfriend has beautiful, brown hair which goes down to the small of her back. It’s absolutely lovely, and I’d never want her to get it cut.
On the other hand, it can be a serious bitch (the hair, not her) to deal with. I’m sitting on her hair, or I’m leaning on her hair, or I try to rub her neck and end up pulling her hair. Loose long hairs everywhere in our room. Trust me, there’s no experience quite like having a two foot long hair wrap itself tightly around the most sensitive part of your anatomy.
As for my hair (so long as we’re talking), I used to have long hair- about down to the backstrap of my bra… er, about down to the middle of my back. Once the Male Pattern Baldness started to get noticeable, I went to a shorter, standard cut- seriously balding people with long hair just look silly and desperate, IMHO. But I do miss having long hair. Never really had a problem with it, aside from accidentally setting it on fire once.

I used to have really long hair (down to the small of my back), and it was a bitch to take care of. Washing wasn’t a problem, but drying was- for one thing, I have dry skin, so I never blow-dry my hair. The other thing is, I have alot of hair- it’s not particularly thick, but there’s a lot of it.
My best advice for people who want to have long hair" keep it in braids! A lot of guys (my hubby included) like that, and it keeps yer hair from knotting.
I’ve had long (blonde) hair most of my life–long enough to sit on at one point. My husband claims to like it, so I haven’t done anything about it, even though I don’t think it looks especially great anymore, after almost 40 years and two babies.
Pros: It can be worn in a variety of styles. It is cheap to maintain.
Cons: Thick, fine hair like mine tangles if you even look at it. It it messy. (One time a rug we had was returned from the cleaner, and the man apologized for not being able to get all the hair off. “What kind of dog do you have, anyway?” he said.)
Speaking of long red hair, I was just looking through the current issue of Playboy … ummm, looking for their insightful film reviews … and saw Angie Everheart’s pictorial. I always thought she had approximately shoulder-length hair but in these pictures her hair was down to her ass (not that I blame it). Is that her real hair or was she wearing a wig or extensions?
I had the obligatory long locks in high school ( mid back to near butt at times) and after graduation and entering the real world, I once got my hair caught in the door of my locked car door and I had dropped my car keys and could not reach them with my foot or hand. I stood there like a dummy for about five loooong minutes until some one came by and helped me out.
I think there is nothing ( and no offense to the ladies on this board who are like this, it’s my own opinion.) more pathetic than a woman past a certain age (Like Jane Seymor) who won’t cut their hair. ( At least Jane’s is kept up.) When I see all the straggle ends and the unevenness, I just want to slip in behind them and cut off all the split ends.
I would like to try to grow my hair out from it’s 1"-2" length, but the convenience of it all ( about 30 seconds to do my hair in the AM) combined with wearing glasses ( I look terrible with longer hair and glasses.) makes me keep it pixie short. Besides, it’s too fine and straight to do anything but hold a pony tail. ( I used kiddie pony tail holders when I had long hair to give you an idea of how fine it is.)
I’ve finally stopped fighting my hair’s natural wave and started wearing it long (almost to the small of my back). It’s very similar to the pics that Shayna posted, but probably thinner. The only difference is I have bangs. I never got many compliments on my hair until I let it go long and natural. Oh, and my fiance’ has fits whenever I mention that it needs a trim.
Uncle Beer, it’s strawberry blonde. Does that count?
