Has anyone seen any really weird, unusual, hard-to-find, or off-the-wall flavors of Ramen noodles? Like Kim Chee, or Habañero, or gaegogi, or apple cider, or anything?
I’ve seen some imported stuff that’s in flavors like kimchi and cuttlefish. I’ve also seen some seaweed flavors like nori. I don’t think I’ve seen anything really weird but a lot of those packages don’t seem to have any English on them so who know’s what’s in them?
We went on a trip around the US when I was 12 or so. On that trip we camped a lot and ate a LOT of ramen noodles. I got so sick of them I haven’t eaten them since.
I’ve picked up some ramen noodles in Indian grocery stores, with brand name Maggi, in curry, masala, and chatpata flavors. Not sure if you would consider those unusual.
I had some Kim chee ramen the other day. It was all right – it didn’t really taste all that much like the real thing, just a vaguely spicy flavor with a few bits of what MIGHT have been pickled cabbage in it. Nong Shim makes it.
I haven’t seen too many odd flavors in domestic ramen, but when I shop in Chinatown I like to pick up these flaors:
curry, satay, shallot chicken, prok ribs, sesame chicken, beefball, and anything that looks really hot - my husband digs those. Ones with Korean on the package seem to be spicier than all the others. Mmmm.
I know there’s fat in ramen, and that it’s in the noodles – but what about the salt?
Is it mostly in the flavor packet?
Because I don’t use the flavor packets that come with the noodles, I use my own flavorings (so, basically, I don’t pay attention to the flavor of ramen I buy)
The most distinctive variety I’ve found at our local Asian market is “Shrimp Creamy Tom Yum Flavor”. It’s not as nasty as it sounds, but it is quite bizarre. The primary tastes are citrusy and green oniony. It’s also very, very spicy. I was taken aback the first time I tried it, but now I always pick up at least one packet.
For instant ramen, I’ve seen the Lime-chili, Cuttlefish, Kimchee and Nori. My favorite is the ‘Chow Mein’ flavor (made by Kirin, I think) which has a rich, dark broth.
Not a strange flavor, but strange packaging. I actually don’t know what the flavor was supposed to be (it was in Chinese), but the front of the package had a small swastika on it. Not like part of the design, just a single symbol without anything around it. It reminded me perversely of a Kosher symbol.
