Theres another thread on the movies people thought were the worst, I’d just like to defend the ones that seem to only be liked by me:
The Village - cmon, its an M. Night movie, you knew what you were getting
*Eurotrip *- Don’t forget - America was founded by prudes! Walking Tall - It had The Rock - you knew what you were getting, 90 minutes of vegtime! Shrek 2 - This movie was awesome! Cheered me up at a rough time in my life. Meet the Fokkers - Again, what did you expect? The Day After Tomorrow - I am the Only One on Earth who liked this movie Kinsey - This was just incredible
I do concur that Catwoman, White Chicks, and Troy were wastes of time. Good thing I didn’t pay to see any of those.
Now normally I consider myself to have a moderately sophisticated taste in movies - that being said, I do enjoy a good mindless flick now and then, but I recognize them for what they are, and don’t consider them on the same plane as Schindler’s List and The Shawshank Redemption.
I’m not quite sure how Kinsey & Shrek 2 made that list, since they were two of the best reviewed films of the past year. Kinsey is at 87% at Rotten Tomatoes and has appeared on many top ten lists and Shrek 2 is at 90%.
Of the ones you mentioned I only saw 3. The Village, which wasn’t nearly as bad as people made it out to be. I blame the marketing. I recently saw a commercial for the DVD release that played up the whole ‘secrets & things not as they seem’ angle rather than ‘what are these monsters’ and I think the film would have been much better received if it had been promoted that way from that start. Shrek 2, which I thought was hilarious when I first saw it and extremely well made, but I don’t think it’ll hold the same appeal on second viewing. Too many pop culture related jokes that were only funny then.
And The Day After Tomorrow which was horrible, just really stupid, my worst film of the year (I didn’t see any of the big hated ones like Catwoman or Troy, because they are supposed to be bad and why would I want to pay to see a film I know will suck?)
I think Van Helsing isn’t anywhere near as bad as people have said. I can’t see that it’s any less entertaining than most other mindless effects movies, and it never pretended to be anything other than a mindless effects movie.
But then, I like the first Tomb Raider film, so perhaps I’m not like other folks.
I liked I Huckabees. It had an internal rhythm that was entirely different than most Hollywood movies. Even small independent ones. Sideways had totally standard rhythm and even a good film like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was fairly standard in the way it came across.
But Huckabees felt like nothing I had seen before, and even though it’s not a great or perfect film I enjoyed watching it a lot more than films that got much greater acclaim. Like, yuck, Sideways.
heh
I laughed quite a bit at Eurotrip (and I am a 50 year old woman. I’m very much a a backpacker, but still.)
I enjoyed Troy too, even though it was nowhere close to what it could have been.
Enjoyed Kinsey and Shrek 2 as well.
Scottie doesn’t know!
