Reckless driving: How was this video made?

I’ve complained about driving in Thailand, but I’ve never seen anything quite as bad as this. How do they stage and film driving like this?

Isn’t it just some guy on a motorcycle with a camera following that truck?

Nice crash at the end, and lots of bent sheet metal for all the other drivers, so not sure this was staged. Possibly the truck driver was trying to flee from the motorcyclist?

Anywhere the truck goes the motorcycle can probably follow, so filming isn’t a huge challenge, especially if the moto passenger is the one holding the camera.

Maybe a helmet cam footage from a police officer on a motorcycle?

I assumed that (though the camera’s steadying feature is impressive).

But was this a real maniac driving “in the wild” on the highways? Some parts seem staged (e.g. a car driving far to the right in his lane, making room for maniac, blockage at the U-turn place?). More importantly, the reckless driving seems hugely exaggerated — Anybody who really drove like that would be long-since dead!

I agree with scr4, most likely a police pursuit video.

The crash seemed very unlikely. There was no reason for him to swerve to the right like that.

Really depends on how long he’s been driving like that – which we have no way of knowing – doesn’t it?

And come on, staging a nearly head on collision at highway speed by going over the median? It’s much more plausible that it’s just an asshole driver, possibly under the influence of something.

Got to love that reasoning.

I am in a truck, hauling all kinds of stuff, in terrible traffic… yea I can outrun the police on a motorbike!! Woohoo!!

People seem ready to believe everything is faked these days (and skepticism is good!) but this looks real to me. Just some random asshole. I’d love to know what he was thinking, though.

Still, it’s probably just another day in…wherever that was.

I’d assume the driver was trying to evade the motorcyclist pursuing/filming him - when dodging, weaving and U-turns weren’t working, maybe he thought that crossing the divider would throw off the pursuer.

Sure there was.

Pause the video at 1:33, which is right before he goes to the right. There’s no path forward for him any other way. There’s a bus on the left shoulder, cars in both lanes, and a truck that’s sort of taking up the “middle lane” he was using earlier.

It looks like he thought he could go just a bit over the median and keep going, but misjudged.

This looks real to me.

There are some comments on this version of that video that may explain where the footage comes from: - YouTube

Or he’d just seen the latest Jason Bourne film and thought, “That doesn’t look so difficult.”

Stranger

That looks real to me. And people really do drive that crazy/stupid.

Just about a month ago I was on the road in traffic about as heavy as it gets while still moving 70-80mph, and two cars popped into my rearview for about a second before they whizzed past me, weaving around all 3 lanes like Frogger. They appeared to be racing and with me doing 80, they had to be clocking 120-130 easy. I absolutely expected to find the Porche in a heap of flames a couple miles up, but nope. Just gone.

The video was definitely made in Thailand. I’ve complained about the driving here, but never seen anything like this. I’m glad everyone agrees that it’s a real-life chase — that was my impression, but it still struck me as unbelievable. As you can see, several copies of this video were all posted very recently. I saw it in my Facebook Newsfeed.

I searched for “Thailand car chase” at Google News. The first page of hits includes

  • The “Truck driver smashes into 41 vehicles during police chase” came closest, but no, that’s a completely different incident, also startling.
  • The caption of the “finally ends after an officer decides he has had enough and opens fire on a speeding car” video is misleading: the car doesn’t stop despite two gunfire volleys a minute apart. During the final minute the fugitive’s damaged car lays a thick smokescreen…
… And those were just from the first page of Google hits.

The comments are unhelpful. And Google Translate goes crazy on them, apparently unable to translate cuss words. The Thai สรุป ยังคับ ว่า ไอ้หมอนี่ มันเป็นเหี้ยไร is rendered by Google as “It’s also a bit confusing” while the idiomatic intent is closer to “What the F*ck is this evil bastard doing?”
