Hi Guys,
I’m looking for a recliner for my dad, He,s 6 feet tall and weighs about 290. The recliners that we got in the past were pretty expensive ( about $ 400 to 500)but they did not hold up.
The guarantee covers parts but not labor ( yeah, the labor is the most expensive part).
I want to get another one.
It will be used every day.
What’s a good one ?

While you may be able to factually cite consumer reviews and such, which ones are good is going to be ultimately a matter of opinion rather than fact.

When we wanted a recliner, we went to the La Z Boy store near us and tried some out until we found one we liked. Is this an option for your dad?
$400-500 is not that expensive for a recliner (we recently bought a La Z Boy). Mr. Neville has had his La Z Boy recliner for ten years now, and it has held up well. We recently bought another one because I’m pregnant and kept usurping his, and he got tired of that. His is a Harbor Town rocking recliner, mine is a Lancer rocking recliner.
You really need to up the budget - $400-500 is really closer to entry-level quality from a “Loveseats-n-Dinettes” sort of discount furniture shop. Ignoring whatever may be on sale from one week to another, $800 is a much more realistic low end price if you want something that will last more than a year or two. For a really well-built chair, you can easily spend $1200 or more.
Even if you don’t buy a La Z Boy recliner, going to a showroom and trying some out will give you a better idea of what you do and don’t want in a recliner. This isn’t something you should buy without trying it out.
I think your budget is low, too. My new La Z Boy recliner was in the $800s, and that was on sale. This is a classic example of the Sam Vimes Boots theory of economics.
I was given a La-Z-Boy rocker-recliner from my parents when it was about 15 years old. It held up okay for a few more years after that, although the screws began to back out of the frame and I kept trying to fix it by various means until something else broke completely. That said, it lasted something like 22 years with only that problem. When I went and bought a new one, I got the exact same model (with a couple minor changes) of the old one and it’s held up fine for the last couple years so far. I’m trying to find the model name and failing miserably (I think it might be an Astor based on pictures and size), but I have to think they still make it. I’ll post it if I find it, but I agree that you’ll need to consider spending at least $800 for a decent one.
