I’m hoping to find some help here. My wife likes shows that make her laugh. I prefer drama or documentaries or history shows. Yeah I know, boring. Anyway, what can you recommend we try watching?
I’m talking current, regular TV shows and not something on Netflix or other downloads. We don’t have HBO or Showtime. We have a fairly basic DirecTV package. One show she likes is Modern Family, but that’s pretty much all we tape (oh we also have watched the show with the nerdy guys in an apartment) but we’re not familiar with much of what else is out there. Thanks
Of things that are on now that I am watching currently:
“Black-ish”
Others that are on now but I am not caught up with them:
“The Mindy Project”
“New Girl”
I think both are on Fox. I’m watching the former via Hulu and the latter via either Hulu or Netflix, so I can’t speak to the quality of the current season for either, but Mindy especially makes me laugh like an idiot.
(I hate when I only answer half of the question I meant to answer)
Louie (FX), Veep (HBO) and Episodes (Showtime). Community is great and is kind of recent (new episodes will be on Yahoo!), but you can catch reruns in syndication.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Mom are vastly over rated. Prepare to be disappointed. Mom in particular will provoke intense anger at the complete waste of Allison Janney.
Sitcom pickin’s are slim these days. As much as I love Alison Janney I couldn’t get into “Mom.” Same with Mindy Kaling and her show. I liked “Happy Endings” a lot before it got canceled but Casey Wilson’s new show “Marry Me” from the same creator just got deleted from my DVR. Can’t stand “New Girl” but I know many people who like it. John Mulaney is a very funny stand-up comedian but his sitcom is just awful, though I think it might be canceled.
“Big Bang Theory,” “Modern Family” and “The Middle” are all past their prime though I still watch all of them (more from habit than pure enjoyment though there are still occasional chuckles.) “Bob’s Burgers” is hit and miss for me but the voice talents are all very funny.
I think “Parks and Recreation” comes back in January. That’s a good one, though they’re seven or eight seasons in so it might be difficult to jump in without catching some repeats.
I may be a bad person to ask, because I *like *sitcoms. (Which apparently is uncommon, or at least uncool.)
I watch Bad Judge (which I think is about to end :() and** A to Z** (which follows it and is apparently also about to end). Bad Judge is pretty fun, I think; it’s a workplace comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously. A to Z is not bad, but oddly put together. There’s this other sitcom about an office that’s folded into it for some reason (really).
I agree that Brooklyn Nine-Nine is really good.
I have been enjoying** Marry Me**–which is sort of a “weird friends” show–and The Mindy Project–which is also sort of a “weird friends” show–but I can see how they’re not everyone’s cup o’ tea. Of course those both have former Happy Endings cast members, and I loved that show.\
I think last night was the first time I didn’t watch** Mom.** I think I lost my like for the show after their supposedly responsible friend sabotaged their good real estate deal.
Hi there, thanks everyone for your recommendations. I’ll find them and set them to record. My wife, of course, will be the final judge as to how good your comedy taste is.
If you can find reruns of Community or Raising Hope on any of the channels you get, you should record and watch those.
They aren’t “current” technically, Raising Hope ended last season, and Community apparently has moved to some online service for their upcoming season, but they’re recent enough that if you haven’t seen them, you should try and catch them.
Shows actually airing right now, besides what’s already been mentioned, The Middle is a better example of a modern family than any of the three families on that actual show, IMO, and pretty funny too, though not particularly “witty”.
