That is movies I can watch free with Amazon Prime. I’ve seen a few fairly decent foreign movies, but so far it’s definitely not worth the $99 I paid for it.
I like mostly science fiction, fantasy and cartoons. (as long as there not Dora style tripe)
The best thing with Amazon Prime is HBO series (Oz, Sopranos, Six Feet Under, etc.).
ETA: I don’t watch much TV, but I can’t recall much on Amazon that scratches the sci-fi/fantasy itch. Dead Like Me might do it, Carnivale, both with fantastic elements. Carnivale was ended far too early, though.
No specific recommendations, but at least it’s pretty easy to browse by genre from Amazon’s website and see what’s available and what customer ratings they’ve gotten.
Movies do seem to go “in and out of Prime” fairly quickly, so there are films that are available now that didn’t use to be, and others that used to be that no longer are.
They’re not movies, but they are fantasy cartoons - sort of. I found the entire series of Shaun The Sheep free on Amazon Prime and binge-watched all of them in a week or two. It was interesting to see the change in the puppets from “clay” to plastic dolls and then back again to clay as the series progressed, which I assume was due to a failed attempt to cut costs.
Mr. Selfridge is an awesome series.
Man in the High Castle also good.
While some TV/Movies seem to be permanently “Prime”, others get rotated so that movies that you have to rent will occasionally be made “Prime” for a period of time, then go back to being a pay rental. So check “recently added movies” as well as browsing genres.
2001: A Space Odyssey is currently Prime.
FWIW, I like Amazon Prime. For $8/month I think it’s a good deal.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Interstellar
Eastbound and Down series
Curb your Enthusiasm series
No Country for Old Men
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Red Dawn
All 3 of the Stargates are on Prime. I saw some Star Trek as well. I usually just scroll down on this page until I hit the Sci-fi TV and Movies listings: https://www.amazon.com/Prime-Video/b/ref=sv_mov_9?ie=UTF8&node=2676882011 and then it usually starts offering me “more like X” when I load that page.
They’re alot stronger on TV shows than movies, although I like being given the option to rent a movie instead of pretending it doesn’t exist like Hulu and Netflix do.
I’ll second 2001: A Space Odyssey
Not movies, but I recommend the following TV series:
The Americans. I found this just mesmerizing. A husband and wife try to raise a normal family, blending into suburbia while working as ruthless Russian spies.
Alpha House. A hilarious and insightful send up of contemporary US politics. Starring John Goodman.
Just binge watch the episodes and pretend they are movies.
The main reason to pay the Amazon prime fee isn’t the movies, it’s the two-day free shipping. I order tons of stuff and get it promptly with no shipping charges-- two cases of cat food every week, vitamins, cosmetics (Obagi products are quite reasonably priced), electronics (got my unlocked phone there), small appliances (my Instant Pot electric pressure cooker). Last week I bought a Pilates Spine Corrector Barrel (if you have to ask…) for $160. Arrived in two days, free shipping. It came on a Sunday; Amazon has a deal with the post office to deliver on Sundays.
The movies are just extra/afterthought.
Carry on.
We’ve had more luck with TV shows under Prime than movies. Also what ThelmaLou said.
We’re currently watching ]The Man In The High Castle. Highly recommended.
Given your tastes, I think you will like Orphan Black. I’m still in the first season, and the sci-fi is of the genetics variety, and so far the science element is not implausible or silly - which is rare. The gimmick is the endearing Tatiana Maslany playing multiple roles.
ThelmaLou is on target. Prime video is just a “gimme” when you’re really after the free two-day shipping. That being said…
The entire run of Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is available on Amazon Prime. It was cooler when you were getting to watch it at just about the same time it was being shown in Japan; that’s over now, but if you want to cross Attack on Titan with The Walking Dead, it’s a good show! Also, at only 13 episodes, it’s not a huge time commitment.
Additionally, I think Legends of the Dark King is free on Prime still. If you’re familiar with Fist of the North Star, Legends tells the parallel story of Kenshiro’s older “brother”, Raoh, and his rise to power. Like Iron Fortress, there are not too many episodes from beginning to conclusion so it’s not a huge investment.
I was going to mention my current obsession, Knights of Sidonia, but that’s Netflix, not Amazon.
If you’ve never seen Val Kilmer be funny on purpose (he got more serious as he got older), check out Top Secret! It’s free on Prime, too. In fact, I could use a laugh - I may (re-) watch it this weekend.
I disagree that Prime Video is just a “gimme”. That may have been true in the beginning but they have since stepped up their game with original content. Plus they have an exclusive deal with HBO.
