Recommend "House" names for my school

I teach at a middle school. We have separate “houses”, which are basically just teams of kids that have the same core teachers(Math, English, Social Studies, and Science).

Anyway, this year the “house” names in our school are all sports teams. I teach for House Lions, and the other are all Michigan related sport team names. In 2006, I taught for House Chicago, and everyone had city names.

I need suggestions for some cool themes that we could name the houses for next year. In the past, they’ve used Harry Potter, Survivor(tribe names), and other ideas.

What might be some cool themes we could use for next year? I’m looking for something 6th/7th grade kids could get into and would be fun.

Any ideas for house name?

Religions - you can have a competition to determine the one true faith.

Any ideas for house name?

At our Secondary Colleges we have houses named after founding fathers and Civic Leaders of the city such as Hopetoun, Chaffey, Sturt and Deakin and other schools have named their houses after eminent Australian scientists or explorers.

I’m actually surprised given the gambling nature of Aussies that we don’t have houses named after previous Melbourne Cup winners … Phar Lap, Archer, Makybe Diva …

How about:

Gregory
Cuddy
Wilson
Cameron
Chase
Foreman and
13

Yes, I’m sure this would be wonderful.

Named after famous fictional doctors

Watson House
Fu Manchu House
Who House
House House
Jekyll House
Quincy House

etc.

What’s wrong with adding Cutthroat Bitch?

ah yes, 6th and 7th graders…never mind.

House Wax
House Pancakes
House Seven Betty Grables

(National Lampoon’s Doon)

What about a Tolkien theme?

There are Hobbits, Elves, Orcs, Dwarves, Trolls, and so on.

Or place names.

Gondor, Hobbiton, Rivendell…

This is probably horribly geeky and if I were a student I’d probably hate it but considering their ages and the fact that there’s an Election in November maybe you could name them after branches of government.

Senators
Representatives
Executives
Judges

If you want to keep with the “House XYZ” theme maybe you could conjure up something related to Washington D.C., White House, Pentagon, Smithsonian, Beltway etc.

To simplify matters would could just go with Mount Rushmore presidents; Roosevelt, Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington. Give the kids an excuse to get curious about US History.

My middle school went with the names of colleges nearby. Downside: Rivalries. Upside: Gets kids thinking about college early.

It really depends on how many houses you have.

Here are some themes that would work well if you had between 4 and 8, don’t know how well they would stretch to bigger numbers:

Continents (Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe)
Explorers (Cook, Columbus, Marco Polo, Livingstone)
Shakespeare (Lear, Hamlet, Romeo, Puck, Othello, Cleopatra)
Food (Italian, Chinese, French, Indian, Mexican)
Famous queens (Victoria, Cleopatra, Elizabeth, Boudicea, Marie Antoinette)

These ones you could expand fairly easily:
Film genres (fantasy, drama, comedy, arthouse, animated, action, western)
Music genres (rock, pop, country, classical, soul, gospel, disco)
Capital cities of the world (London, Rome, Beijing, Nairobi, Singapore, Canberra)

There are loads I could think of, but I don’t know whether they would appeal to 13 year olds.

House Corrino
House Atriedes
House Harkonnen
House Richese
etc.

Why not famous scholars?

House Einstein
House Gould
House Newton

(you get the idea)

Or possibly famous Royal houses of the past, as sort of a history lesson.

House Stuart
House Lancaster
House Capet
House Bonaparte
House Bourbon
House Bernadotte
House Romanov

Ooo, wait, Peloponnesian wars:

House Athens
House Sparta
House Corinth
House Argos
House Achaea
House Megara
House Samos
etc.

house BA Baracus
house “Howling Mad” Murdock
house Hannibal Smith
house Templeton “Faceman” Peck

There’s something there for everyone: house BA for the Jocks, house Hannibal for the young Americans that the world looks to for leadership, Faceman house for cheerleaders and the like, and house Murdock for the extravagant outcasts. I’d be in the last house

Different groups of animals? Big cats, sea mammals, reptiles, farm animals (I’m saying choose names from those groups, not “House Big Cats” or “House Sea Mammals”)

When I was a kid our “teams” were named…1,2,3,4,5 and 6. Whee!

Check out some university websites and see how they have named their residence halls. The newer ones frequently have some sort of theme in mind. For instance, there’s a set of dorms at UCSD named after famous exploratory ships, and UCI has a set named for places in LOTR. On the other hand a greater number of university dorms are probably named after founders and benefactors.

aww, I was gonna post that…
