It’s that time of year again when I develop problems sleeping because using just a sheet on my bed at night is too cold, but my usual comforter is too warm. Can someone recommend to me a duvet/comforter/quilt - type bed blanket that is very lightweight? I figure this is a cheaper alternative to turning down (up?) the A/C below its current 72 degrees.
I prefer duvets, etc. to cloth blankets, because you can kick a duvet so that there is an airpocket between you and the material, whereas a blanket just lays right down on top of you (too warm).
If you can’t recommend a specific duvet, etc., are there particular fabrics or materials I should seek out or avoid?
I don’t remember which brand I bought, but go silk filled. It breathes beautifully and wicks moisture to keep you more comfortable at a wider range of temps. They have various fill levels. I will say it drapes more than cotton, down, or synthetic so it forms closely to your body. It also feels cooler when you first get in.
If you’re not really concerned with decoration, poncho liners are awesome in warm weather with chilly nights. They are quilted so they retain heat, but they’re very light so they don’t ever get sticky or stifling.
I recommend a set of silk sheets, with as high a momme (silk measure) as possible, maybe over 20? If you can swing the cost and the care requirements, the sheets feel luscious to start and improve even more as time goes on. I wash them in cold water and rinse and dry at low heat, in a net bag to reduce abrasions. Make sure you wear socks all the time or keep your feet well manicured–I once ruined a set by wearing holes via my rough feet! I realize they’re a real splurge but I think they’re great. They’re incredibly light but warm in winter and cool in summer.
Silk is great. Oddly, I have a wool filled one, and it also works, not as light as silk, certainly, but also still warm in the winter. Wools ability to breath makes it good summer or winter.
