Recommend me an internet fax service

So the fax machine in our school’s office has been giving us fits for years. Sending is usually no problem (unless it’s raining outside  ) but receiving can be a nightmare. Often times, faxes just won’t come through, and lately, they’ll come through all garbled up. We’ve tried just about everything: changing machines, changing phone lines, changing to a computer, changing the computer, changing out the fax card, changing the fax software.

I give up. We’re a small school with a limited budget and this problem is taking up too much of my time. I want someone else to maintain my office’s faxes. We’re even willing to pay for it as long as it doesn’t break the bank.

Does anyone have any success with internet-based fax services? We need to be able to receive faxes, obviously. Sending faxes could be done here with existing hardware, or via the service. What else is there in a fax service that we should look out for?

Any recommendations on specific services? Success stories? Horror stories?

I use eFax. They give me my own fax number, and the message gets e-mailed to me. I had reason to use it just a week ago, for the first time in several years, and it all worked perfectly.

They send advertisements to your inbox, but it’s well worth it – since it’s free.

I use efax, I’m not totally happy with it, the price seems a bit much for what you get, and a lot of junk faxes, which may have been authorized by efax (I got this from some old message boards that accused efax from selling the ability to junk fax their customers).

I used to use eFax. It worked very well, but it was horrendously expensive compared to my new service: www.faxaway.com.

Free incoming faxes, too! I’ve gotten 2 spam faxes in 1 month. Not much of an inconvenience. It has really come in handy (the service, not the spam) lately since I’ve been faxing stuff about 5 times a day as part of my job search.
