Recommend me some good hymn cds/mp3?

Hi all!

I am a sucker for those old Christan hymns, and am wondering what are some good ones that I should try. What I dislike: songs that sound like it belongs to a shopping mall.

I don’t mind instrumental or vocal; I am also quite willing to get them from MP3 download stores too. As for the style, I listen mostly to anything, from good old orchestra/instrumentation to pop.

Thanks!

My wife and I like the old (mostly pre-WWII) music that is the pre-cursor to country, and a lot of that consists of Christian hymns and devotionals. For example, we have this album by the Carter Family, and it is fantastic. Overtly religious tracks like “Wouldn’t Mind Dying,” “Church in the Wildwood” (and non-religious tracks like “I Never Will Marry”) are outstanding. Don’t know if that’s the kind of stuff you are into, but you can listen to snippets of each song on Amazon.

I got a couple CDs by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. A lot of CCM artists have done Hymn albums. I especially recommend Sheila Walsh. I’ll post when I think of more.

You ever hear any of Elvis’s Gospel? Amazing stuff.

**Steal Away** features jazz greats Hank Jones and Charlie Haden taking on old time spirituals. Spare, beautiful, and very reverent.

I’ve always been a fan of the Statler Brothers and they do a great job with your standard church hymns in **Radio Gospel Favorites**

Rhino had the great **Jubilation** **Series** that has a tremendous variety of black gospel artists (though the songs may not be familiar, depending on what kind of church you grew up in).

And of course, I have to give props to my favorite Gospel group ever: **The Dixie Hummingbirds**
