Recommend Me Some iPad Games

I’m going to be in the hospital all next week. No big deal, but I’d like to take some entertainment in with me. Know of any good games? Here are the kinds of games I like:

  1. Adventure games like Zork (although if you’re old enough to know what Zork is, you probably don’t know any more about iPad games than I do). For example Device 6 is completely and totally awesome (I’m stuck on the radio frequencies, but I think I know how to get the third one).
I guess that’s about it. Some more thoughts:

  2. I used to enjoy mah jongg on my computer, but the only versions I’ve found for the iPad are way too easy —I win 98% of the games.

  3. I like comic books. However, I recently downloaded a DC game that seems to involve nothing but punching and kicking random bad guys. I guess I can’t expect any more than that, though.

  4. Minecraft is fun. I have trouble with the iPad controls, so I got the computer version instead, but some other game where you build stuff would be cool.

  5. I like home design and construction.

  6. If you have a game that you love to death, but it doesn’t fall into any of these categories, please tell me about it.

Thanks!

I was just getting ready to do a search for some recommended iPad games myself! Hopefully some other folks will respond.

I am completely hooked on hidden object games/mysteries for iPad. I hate to think of how much money I’ve spent on these things, they are addictive. So far for me, the best selection comes from Big Fish games. I loved Mystery Trackers: The Void, and there’s a newish one called Amaranthine Voyage: Tree of Life which was also pretty good. Big Fish has done a couple of these games with a literary bent, such as Edgar Allen Poe - Tales of the Rue Morgue. If you download the Big Fish Game Finder, you don’t have to sift through so many other games to find really good ones.

Caveat: Big Fish games run expensive. They’re all marked “free” but have an in-app purchase…you play about 1/8 of the game, long enough to get hooked and then you either pay up (usually $4.99 - $6.99!!) or get out.

Good luck on your hospital stay! Hope you find some good games to keep you company.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

You are welcome. It is marked free, so you can try it if you like. It costs a little money to get the whole thing, but I almost guarantee you will.

You are welcome.

I’ve played a bunch of them, but only the abbreviated versions. Guess I should spring for the full package, huh?

PS: Thank you for the kind wishes.

I’ll download it now. Thanks!

As a software developer, I get quite dismayed at this meme. At the high end of your “expensive” range there is $7. That’s a couple of designer coffees, or about half a movie ticket. It’s about half an hour at minimum wage most places.

That game probably cost at least a half a million dollars to develop, and this new world where “app” prices basically have to be “free” in order to get any traction (especially in the Android world, but even in iOS) is already starting to degrade the quality of software available (that’s why the DC game is “just punching random bad guys” – because making it more complex will mean never recovering development costs). And of course if you put in ads (which never really pay very well, anyway), you get dinged for that, too.

I’ve just started playing clumsy ninja. So far it’s ok.
Best of luck with you hospitalization.

Knights of the old republic was recently released for the ipad. It’s a really, really, good Star Wars RPG. Highly recommended if you haven’t played it. With dozens of hours of gameplay it’ll last your entire hospital visit. One of my most favorite games of all time.

Edit: It’s a turn based game so you don’t need fast reflexes.

I like dead trigger and civilization.

I’ve certainly heard of this game, and I know it’s good. If you’ll forgive a stupid question — Is it an MMPG? Or can I play it offline by myself?
Yeah, that’s two questions. I was trying to dilute the stupidness.

The concern most have for pricier games isn’t the price, but the risk of not liking the game once you’ve paid. A $2 gamble on a bad game is easier to swallow. For a game you like (in my case, Inifinity Blade I/II/III, Rage HD, Words with Friends, all recommended) the price is miniscule compared to the entertainment I’ve gotten from them.

The game is an offline single player game. There’s an MMO, The Old Republic, that’s a sequel to KOTOR. I haven’t played it as I’m not really into MMOs.

I love Minecraft style building/adventure/exploration games so my post will focus on your third point. I suggest visiting this page on Minecraft game suggestions which I recently used to find many of the ones I’ll discuss below.

Here are my favourites that I’ve currently been playing on my iPhone/iPad:
Junk Jack - One of my favourites at the moment, kind of a mix of Minecraft and Terraria with building, resource gathering, adventuring etc. Just a very nice design and art style that I really like.
Block Story - A Minecraft like game that has more RPG features and focus on quests/fighting enemies. It’s one of my favourites because I like RPGs but might not be for you.
Lunacraft - Basically Minecraft in space and its free which is nice.
Survivalcraft - Another simple copy of Minecraft but I prefer it over Minecraft Pocket Edition for pure creation/creative mode.
Block Fortress - Odd mix of tower defence, building, Minecraft and fps. Lots of fun.
Deep World - Another free one which I’m just starting to explore now.

Bonus game: Pocket Mine, just really fun and addicting but might not be what you are after.
Double Bonus game: Middle Manager of Justice, since you mentioned you like comic books. In this game you get to create your own superhero team and help them deal with evil around the game world, its a management game with turn based combat.

Strongly Recommend the Ace Attorney HD Trilogy for iPad. It’s an adventure/murder mystery game that’s hillarious and touching and wonderful. Lots of reading. Good puzzles. And it’s 3 games that form a nice trilogy, one of my favorite franchises ever.
