I don’t want to seem like a snot, so let’s just say that if it bothers you, it bothers you. Most of us have little grammar things that bug us, even if they’re correct or are used widely enough anyway.
I have a needle and some wool here if you would like to borrow them.
It drives me up the wall, too. I’m grateful that all such posts are in the Cafe, because if they weren’t, I’d have alienated a bunch of people by suggesting things along the lines of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, or Nerf toys.
Didn’t these peoples’ teachers learn them anything?
“Recommend” refers to the subject of the sentence, which is the book or music being requested, not the person who is asking for the recommendation. To say “recommend me” is to ask that one be recommended to another, as in “recommend me for that job, wouldja, pal?”. In that case, “recommend me” is correct. When one wishes to receive recommendations for books or movies, one should say “Recommend *to * me”. And while that is correct, it is awkward. Better to say “recommend a book/movie/song to me”
Does that make sense? I’ve always had a good innate understanding of grammar, I’ve never been especially good at explaining it.
Recommend me a book is fine, although quirky. The subject is the understood “you”; the only other oddity is that the indirect object
“me” precedes the direct object “book.”
BTW, be that (the above) as it may, if it sounds awkward, it sounds awkward. Don’t mean to point an accusing finger atcha.
Some of this shit up with I will not put.
Somebody ought to learn them to talk English gooder.
“Gooder” ain’t gonna be enough. Ya gotta learn them to talk MORE gooder. Sheesh!
If you don’t talk gooder, you’ll never be the bestest.
