recommend voice recording/editing software

Looking for a SIMPLE voice recording software that will allow me to blend my voice with some other background noises.

Im doing a bit of a “commentary” as a sort of joke on a friend and basically I want to do a monologue while adding little bits and pieces of sounds in the background at various stages to go along with what Im saying. (Its for a PC running XP so no Mac or Linux suggestions please).

I have zero knowledge of any sort of media software, so the simpler the better, and since this is strictly a “for fun” activity I don’t want anything that Id have to pay for.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Depends on how much you want to spend. If you’re looking for free, Audacity is a good one. It’s relatively easy to use and will do pretty much what you want it to do.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to spend $300, Adobe Audition is the software for you. It’s professional-level and will do a LOT more than Audacity will. There is a free trial version of Audition, but you need to have a computer with some serious power to be able to use it.
