Recommend your favorite blog or other online time-waster

I have Internet access at work - nothing streaming, though. No YouTube or anything like that.

Nominate your favorite online time-waster, please, before I pull out my own eyeballs just to give myself something to do. The Dope message board just does not contain enough threads to keep my brain occupied, and there’s only so much to read on *Slate *and *Salon *and such.

Photography, recipes, fuzzy kittens, current events, humor … whatever genre you care to call your favorite.

Please, please, give me something new to think about or look at. Please.

Cracked.com is a pretty good time waster.

and then there’s facebook and twitter

Photoshop disasters is always amusing.

Speak you’re branes mocks the cesspool of stupidity on news feedback comments, primarily the BBC’s ‘Have Your Say’ section.

uniwatch.com: Talks about sports uniforms and such, lots of links to pictures. Also hits on design and other stuff, but mostly the sports unis.

Listverse.com: Short for “list universe” it has lists about a crapload of different subjects. A lot of it is opinionated (Top 10 worst women in the world, who’s to say one is REALLY worse than the other) but overall it’s chock full of facts and information…updated every day!!

Dang I had a whole chatty answer written out, then hit the wrong key and bam. gone. sigh

I read the NYTimes online every day. If you’re reading only at work, Monday can be a busy day catching up on the weekend features. For added fun there are other big-city papers, including ones in the UK, Australia, etc.

For food, try the sites for the mags: Gourmet, Cooking Light, etc., and their respective publishers’ aggregators: myrecipes.com and epicurious.com. I also like The Atlantic’s food site, food.atlantic.com. Blogs are only going to be updated daily at most, but are fun. Here are some I like; some pro, some semi-pro, some am:

Oh, and on a non-food note, of course there’s icanhascheezburger.com and its cousins in the top link bar. I also visit Consumerist regularly, and for celebrity news nothing beats eonline.com.

Consumerist

Post Secret

For reading at work, thedailywtf.com
Its funny and code related so it doesn’t upset the suits.

Dark Roasted Blend is my favourite blog of weirdness. Every week there’s new links to websites with odd stuff, pictures, video, articles and book reviews. There’s everything from “Zoom in on an ant!” to “Postage stamps with Cthulhu!”.

I’m a big big fan of Gadget and Car blogs. I specifically like Gizmodo and Jalopnik along with the other Gawker group blogs which you can find on their sites. In the same vein I like Engadget and Autoblog from the Weblogs Inc group. They too have a bunch of other popular blog topics.

Cute Overload is a excellent quickie time suck as well.

Most of my time wasters have been listed.

here are the rest:

photoshop disasters

damn interesting

lol cats

fundies!!

This is mine too…I could spend hours on it. I especially love the military, vehicle and technology prototype features. Runner up is englishrussia.com, a somewhat cruder and Russian version of the same.

Mangetout’s site is an enjoyable read: http://www.atomicshrimp.com/

http://www.cuteoverload.com

http://www.passiveaggressivenotes.com/

http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/

This is a pretty good time waster. I can spend hours there.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage is a great time waster.

With a warning that my time-wasters tend to be fairly lowbrow, here goes:

The Daily Coyote - Photo blog by a woman in Wyoming who raised a coyote pup after his parents were killed. Amazing photos.

STFU Parents - humorous look at parents who overshare about their kids on Facebook

Sexy People - dedicated to really bad/amusing portraits from decades past

Dlisted - trashy yet hilarious celebrity gossip.

here be dragons… beware

I’ve lost hours at tvtropes, you’ve been warned

I still spend a lot of time at wikipedia, chasing whatever shiny catches my attention for a moment.

The Bleat and The Institute of Official Cheer

Okay, these are all useless but funny.

http://notalwaysright.com/ - stories about stupid/angry customers
http://www.fmylife.com/ - short statements from folks about things in their life that suck - much more amusing than that sounds
http://www.textsfromlastnight.com/ - just what it sounds like, people send in texts that they’re received, usually from drunken friends. example: *(215): I was like, “um, that’s my butthole.” *
http://www.fupenguin.com/ - letters to cute animals about how they’re not fooling anyone
http://1000awesomethings.com/ - just what it says
http://www.sorryimissedyourparty.com/ - showcases pictures found (mostly on flickr) of people at parties, generally parties you are glad you did not attend. I found it when one of my photos turned up there.

Not so much funny but cool:
http://smokeandacoke.com/ - mostly photos, a few videos, no real theme except that they consistently make me stop to think
http://blessourhearts.blogspot.com/ - a southern mama who raises chickens, cusses, and talks about politics sometimes
http://causticcovercritic.blogspot.com/ - book cover design, something I didn’t know I was all that interested in until I started reading this blog
