I guess ‘weather station’ is what they’re referred to from searching Amazon. I’ve had a wall-hanging thermometer / hygrometer / barometer for around 30 years, that survived two or three moves, and today I clumsily knocked it off the wall and broke it pretty much beyond repair. It looked a lot like this one, but was blond wood, not the darker cherry.
It’s been decorative, but also useful, at least the thermometer and hygrometer-- I have no idea if the barometer part ever even worked. I’m most interested in the indoor weather of my office-- It’s a loft space above a garage, and can get pretty hot on summer days like right now. Also, I keep my acoustic guitar up here, so I like to keep an eye on the humidity level in winter.
I’m kind of torn. I have a bare spot on my wall where it used to be, but I don’t necessarily need something old-fashioned and decorative; I definitely want it to be accurate and useful. I’m not against something modern and digital, yet I’m sick and tired of adding yet another ‘internet of things’ style wireless device like this. We have around 57 different things connected to our wireless router, including our garage door opener and an automatic cat feeder, for god’s sake. I wouldn’t mind replacing my dear departed analog weather station for another analog replacement, as long as it’s reasonably accurate.
I’m not really seeing anything on Amazon that’s calling to me. This one is thermometer / hygrometer only, which might be ideal, but it’s for saunas. My office can become a sauna on hot days if I don’t run the window A/C, but still, I think this is just a bit too high of a temp range for my needs.
So, in summary, also the ‘tl;dr’ version:
- I’d like a replacement that is useful, that has as a minimum a thermo / hygro.
- Would like something with at least a little bit of decorative appeal. Prefer a wall-hanging thing.
- Analog would be nice, if accurate. Not against digital, but do not want another wireless device.
