I have many misnamed MP3’s and duplicate MP3’s. I need software to find all the duplictaes and correct names without much assistance from me. Any suggestions?
BUMP
iTunes has a function to find duplicate MP3s. I don’t think there’s anything out there that’ll help you with finding the names, though, except Google and some lyrics. Even that’s not too hot - having different covers out means that the most popular (usually the most recent) floats to the top.
Thanks for the suggestions for Itunes but I’m afraid if I use Itunes for my MP3 management I’m going to want to buy an Ipod to go with it and I don’t want to go down that path
Why? I use iTunes to manage all my music, and I’m still iPod-free.
Check out J River’s Media Center
I use MusicBrainz to rename all my songs. It will search for them online, and change the id3 tags, and rename the files to whatever format you prefer.
AFAIK, it only works for mp3 (not aac, wma, m4a etc).
If you have a lot of remixes, it’s probably not the best way to go, as they are often not listed, but lately it’s been getting up to 90% of my songs correct.
I am pretty sure the site is musicbrainz.org, but I don’t want to direct link. The software itself is called the MBtagger I think, and it’s unobtrusively nagware. It asks for a donation every time you start up, but does not limit the program if you choose not to donate.
Assuming you name everything in the same format (e.g. artist - track name.mp3, or artist-album-track#-trackname.mp3) it will find dupes by adding a (1) to the end of the filename. It also names remixes in the filename, so they do not come up as dupes.
MusicBrainz is probably what you want. It’s an online database of mp3 hashes that does a pretty good job of identifying songs.
There are a number of different clients that will connect to the database, so you can probably find one that’s not nagware. The Mac version, IIRC, is called iEatBrainz.
That said, it’s not a perfect solution. Many times, it won’t be able to figure out the song exactly, and in my experience, the database is neither particularly complete or accurate.
Beause I have coworkers who have one and I want one. If I let Itunes on my PC that will be the last thing blocking me from breaking down and buying one
Thanks I’ll look into that one
I’ll also look into this
Thats a second suggestion for this application
Himself is a DJ, and keeps most of his music in digital form. He uses “Advanced mp3 Manager Pro”. It’s a good app, and has an easily searchable database. It also links to CDDb (CD Database) and will pull titles for tracks if you need them.
We’ve had pretty good luck with it.
