Recovering from vicious 24hr intestinal bug & still feel weak. What makes me feel weak?

Thursday night got hit with an intestinal bug of such virulence I spent that evening and all of Friday curled up in bed in bed dealing with fever, nausea, trembling, epic diarrhea, zero appetite, delirious sleep, and all the fun stuff that comes along with that kind of thing.

It’s now Saturday and I feel a bit better, but I’m still quite weak and have little if any appetite. From a physiological perspective why do I feel so weak and have so little energy. What specially is causing this exhausted feeling?

You are probably dehydrated. Try drinking a lot of water and see how you feel later on today and tomorrow.

You’ve also got to remember calories in vs calories out.

By your own admission, you’ve not really eaten anything in two days now, so that’s no calories in.

On the calories OUT side, you’ve got all of the following, which take a great deal of energy from your body:

Fever/chills
Vomiting (all those muscles all up your back, neck, and stomach)
Diarrhea (ditto, but that gets the legs and lower stomach also)

Not to mention the extra effort your body is putting into killing off the invading forces, which takes up energy all on it’s own - that’s part of the muscle soreness right there - they are depleted.

However, Missbunny is right - most of the next-day epic shittyness is straight-up dehydration. I personally hate Gatorade, but try to drink something other than straight water - watered down soup broth perhaps?

I had it a couple of weeks ago. I was told it would take 4-7 days for recovery, and while the worst was over at 4 I didn’t come back to life until 7.

The sweats as the body raises its temperature to fight off the invading bug were the worst part and the most debilitating. It’s like running an engine past the red line. It feels like you’ve been beaten with sticks from the inside and that’s not a bad analogy. You’d expect to be weak if that happened. The extra time is needed for your body to do internal repairs.

Somewhere around day 8 or 9 my wife said to me, “it’s nice to have you back.” Even when I was upright earlier, I was glazed and shaky and dragging. It took that long to recover. Unfortunately, if your progress is like mine you’ll still be weak until the weekend.

And I also recommend Gatorade or any of its many competitors over other liquids, at least half the time. I lost 5 pounds over the week, even though I drank lots and lots of fluids.

One word: Cytokines.
