Other than September 11, 2001, when there was a massive posting frenzy to try to keep up with the ever-changing story of the attacks on New York and DC, what are other days and the events that happened then that would stand out in the history of this board?
Hurricanes, tornados, big fires, big wrecks, major political turns, personal events that affected more then a few of us, the topics are unlimited.
If you can locate an example post from that day, so much the better. But can we build some highlights to the history?
I mean, most of the days and events that stand out in the history of the board also stand out in history, at least in the U.S. (Where the members of this board are mostly based.) 9-11, Katrina, Iraq, Obamacare, etc.
I’m a little uncertain as to what you are looking for, or why you are looking for it.
In a nutshell, I’d like to construct a “timeline highlights” reference. Key dates of key events that had a large SDMB participation in discussion and perhaps resolution of the events themselves. Something we could use to serve as an SDMB outline of major events the board participated in as a concerned group.
Sorry if that’s vague, but as participants in the thread add ideas, perhaps the thread’s purpose and significance will become clearer. In effect, it’s the germ of an idea that others can add to and modify. A group effort if you will.
I can’t think of anything the board has resolved except for socks and liars. If you want major events that the board has participated in as a concerned group, you’re looking for events like the poster who claimed to have died, or the poster who lied about going through a sex change operation, that sort of thing. While it’s nice to think that our posters have an effect on the greater world, the real world (and I’m certain that some of them as individuals have), nobody is scouring the SDMB as a base for popular opinion.
Let me attempt one other slant on this, please. I tried to gather together in one place the range of posts in each forum that had to do with 9/11 from the time the board first became aware of what was happening. It took some digging around in the archives to get those posts identified and in some rough chronological order. I posted something about that effort some time ago. I could go hunting for that post but I thought the idea of it might suffice.
There have been similar “mass reportings” of events like hurricanes, tornado outbreaks, bad wrecks, etc. A reference to those dates and events might prove useful to SDMB history buffs. Might not. In any case, there’s nothing to make the idea automatically appealing unless others see some value in it.
It’s just an idea at this stage. If you see no value in it, please don’t be bothered with it.
Well, I’m trying to get a handle on what you consider to be “red letter days” on the board.
Honestly, I don’t see any value in this, any more than I see value in your other posts looking to create a spreadsheet. You put my age (revealed in unrelated threads, and it’s not a secret) in multiple posts without asking.) That’s why I asked what you expect to get out of it. What is your goal?
You’ve reminded me of another minor variation on the theme, though. Often, if not usually, a post or two in the Death Pool thread will be the sum total of tributes to the passing of some minor celebrity. Other times there will be multiple threads with many posts that go on for days because of the grief and personal sadness associated with the one passing.
I can point to Opal’s situation and Lynn Bodoni’s as examples of the latter type. There are probably dozens of similar cases.
