I saw a bumper sticker today that was simply bold white letters on a blue background, stating:
RED SUCKS
I was mildly offended, since red is my favorite color, but whatever. I assumed I was missing some context.
So I Googled “red sucks”, and it seems to be the marketing campaign for Red Resort, a ski resort in British Columbia, Canada. Their marketing campaign seems to be all about how much they suck.
And, I live in Washington State, directly south of BC, Canada. So maybe this was a sticker a local picked up there.
But I still wonder if there was some other context around this. Like, could I find a sticker with a red background that says, “BLUE SUCKS”?
ETA, (it’s kinda stupid IMO though, I wouldn’t have let them do it for my resort. Or at least it wasn’t executed very well. But once you’re committed to an idea you’ve already sunk a lot of money into it so you kinda have to run with it. Also, my first guess would have been political as well).
The odd thing was that the bumper sticker, aside from the actual words, didn’t resemble anything on that site or in the commercial. Just a plain red background, and bold white block letters - it almost looked like the Impact font. No logo, nothing.
Nope. Bold, sans-serif font, similar to Impact (but not quite Impact). As far as local teams … the local community college has black & silver for colors, but I don’t know the colors of any of their “rivals”. Among local high schools, the only one with red as its primary color is the local “alternative” HS, but to my knowledge it doesn’t have any sports teams, and I can’t see the local school boards allowing merchandise using the word “sucks” directed at another school. Particularly the alternative school (those kids have enough problems).
The big college rivalry in my state is University of Washington (purple & gold) vs. Washington State University (crimson [not red] & silver). But I’ve never seen references to school colors in “rivalry merchandise” for those two. The Seattle Seahawks recent big rival is the San Francisco 49ers, who have red as one of their colors, but again, I’ve never heard the 49ers referred to as “red”. Likewise, “red” is not a term that comes up in reference to any Seattle Mariners “rivals”. Anaheim Angels and Texas Rangers each have red as their primary color, but it’s not iconic enough for either for it to be a likely reference for “rivalry” purposes.
I starting to suspect some sort of online video game reference, given that the majority of “competative” video games seem to usually feature a “blue team” vs. a “red team”.
A common bumper sticker around here is “Keep Tahoe Blue.” Environmental obviously. There are tons of parodies, but one I saw is “Keep Tahoe Red.” Political? I don’t know.
Both Primus and Lagunitas use the “we suck” selling point/theme.
