I’m casting stones at glass houses here, I’ve done it in the past as well. I like this board because it contains interesting, bright people, but there’s also a side of it that reminds me of the high school gifted and talented program, where people say their points, and then spend the next five pages trying to intellectually one up each other. It reminds me a bit of the Stephen Hawking episode of the Simpsons, where all the eggheads were trying to set social order on who could read the fastest. I kind of thought that type of thing was cool back in high school and early college (seriously), now it just irritates the hell out of me for some reason. I get so tired of fights that are clearly attempts to show the other person does not measure up to one’s own superior intellect, rather than argue any real point or issue.
Again, I’m not immune myself, but I think everyone’s viewpoint on this was clear about 2 pages ago. Now it’s just, “Fuckstain, if you weren’t so stupid, you might recognize how right and smart I am,” for page after page. I understand it’s the Pit, but it just seems pointless.
I do not know the certain answer, but lately, I’ve just stopped responding when it gets to that stage.

I have quite a bit of sympathy for your assessment. I would have much happier had this thread concerned itself with the rather focused point I was making in my OP. However, I have never believed that ignorance can be fought without calling it into the light. When I see fallacious and misleading arguments directed against me, I am generally inclined to point them out. When those arguments are combinesd with prafanity and name calling, I am generally not inclined to be overly polite about it.

I can see where you are coming from. Part of the fun of message board antics is, well, the visceral thrill you get from trashing someone, especially if you are right. This brings out the part of my personality that does not win me many friends at parties, but I can live with that.

Well, collectively, sure. If ten people get pissed off at Liberal, they need average only slightly more than one-tenth as many Liberal bullshit units (LBUs) in order to collectively exceed his LBU output. Since Liberal posts a lot, I think the LBU differential is quite easily pushed into imbalance. Maybe I should write a scientific paper on the subject and give those journals something to publish other than creationism.

That is, the first post might contain BU/10, but if someone else chimes in with essentially the same post, the bullshit content increases to BU/5. Bullshit accumulates rapidly at an increasing rate with each marginal bullshitter. Liberal’s bullshit, such as it is, only increases arithmetically, so it is soon swamped by the geometrically increasing magnitude of PGBU, or Peanut Gallery Bullshit Units.

Well, perhaps the LBUs and PGBUs follow a logarithmic progression. As Liberal chimes in, his LBU rating gradually levels out, while the PGBU units in response also level out but at a higher plateau. Certainly once the bullshit saturation is total, further applications draw diminishing returns.
