Referencing individual posts...

I know how to url reference threads, but I notice sometimes when pointing out something specific or a specific poster the link goes straight to that post.
How do you do that?

Just add “#post” and the post number to the end of the URL you would normally use to paste to a specific thread. You can find the post number by hovering over the “Quote” button with the cursor. Here’s an example:

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=80299#post1490064

You can also bookmark individual posts this way (as I have done with that one on my broswer). If you’re in IE, after you click on a link to an individual post, just click on “Add to Favorites” on the “Favorites” menu as you would any other web page.

That’s a little confusing, MEBuckner.

The best way to do that trick was originally explained by UncleBeer in a thread from way back when. I can’t find it now, which is probably a good thing - Ironically, in the thread I’m referring to, the depth and detail of UncleBeer’s explanation makes, in the end, even it hard to understand.

A far more simplified, and easier, way to do this trick was posted recently by Northern Piper in this thread.

Piper even includes a cut and paste template thingy to make it even easier still (Incidentally, the cut and paste Piper explains is what I eventually came up with after reading UncleBeer explanation).

The only thing missing, or that needs clarification, in Pipers thread is that you don’t have to click the quote button- you can get the ID number by simply hovering over the quote button.

From there, cut and paste.

Well no wonder my explanation is confusing. I don’t know how to do it either.

You’re kidding, right UncleBeer?

I used to have that thread bookmarked for reference, but I lost it in a windows re-format. I’m almost positive it was you that explained it.

My apologies UncleBeer. It wasn’t you that explained it, it was Alphagene.

It was so long ago I got the two of you mixed up.

Anyrate, the thread I was remembering is here. And the post in question (You saw this coming a mile away) is here.

Another, often overlooked, way to find out how someone coded something, or how they did a particular thing a certain way, is to simply click the quote button in that post and it will come up in the reply window showing the code or technique the poster used.

The discussion I’m trying to find and can’t concerned the millionth thread. There were lots of examples giving in that discussion. I just can’t recall how to search for something like that.

Anyone else recall that discussion?

Silly me. I was searching on “million”.
It was found under 1,000,000".
