Reinstalled Windows...any way to get my Firefox bookmarks back?

OK, so I had a completly random crash today (was playing a game, and the display froze and sound kept looping. Ctrl-alt-del, esc, and alt-tab all did nothing.)

I restarted with the power button and could not boot into XP. I could get into safe mode, did a system restore, and still could not boot into windows. I tried a repair install, to keep all my settings, programs, etc…, but that didn’t even work. It would get to about halfway through and then freeze up with about 34 minutes left, according to itself. I tried that five times, and it always froze up at the same spot, so I had to do a complete reinstall and lose a lot of stuff.

What I wold like to know is if the bookmarks folder for Firefox was kept in some place that wouldn’t have gotten written over by either a reinstall of XP OR a reinstall of Firefox, since I did that too, and soon after realized maybe I shouldn’t have.

Firefox keeps its bookmarks in a single file – bookmarks.html. If it wasn’t overwritten when you reinstalled, you should be able to find it in a profile folder under C:\Documents and Settings<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles.

Dammit, not there. There is a folder for the user name I had on the previoud installation, but there is no “Application Data” folder for that name.

Fuck.

It’s a hidden folder. You may have your folder preferences set wrong viewing it.

When the user folder is open:

  1. Tools–> Folder options
  2. Select the ‘View’ tab
  3. Under ‘Hidden files and folders’ select ‘Show hidden files and folders’

This should allow you to see it.

What AHarris said.

Or you can just copy and paste:

C:\Documents and Settings<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

into the address bar of Windows Explorer, replacing <username> with your username, and the folder will appear, if it exists.

:smack:
You’re right! There are alawys a bunch of little things I forget to do when I reinstall Windows, and one of them is to turn on hidden folders and files.

Thanks a lot!
