Religioustolerance.org has 404'd

In 2023 religioustolerance.org shut down. It was a project of Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance and once hosted over 8000 articles describing various religions and religious positions. The reasons for its closure aren’t listed at wikipedia, though they appear to have a private facebook group that had 5 posts today. I hope they weren’t spam.

I and others linked to them a number of times over the years. They are missed. Does anyone here know what happened to them?

I’d never heard of the group before, but a quick LinkedIn search turned this up:

Based on the fact that he graduated university 65 years ago he would be in his mid-late 80s.

Looks like they went down in May 2023:

The previous snapshot looks normal:

After May '23, there are a lot of varying error messages, and then finally it devolves into spam sites, which obviously bought the domain and used it to push various garbage (gambling at least).

I don’t know what happened to them, but I can share an anecdote. I have always been interested in world religions and stumbled upon religioustolerance.org about 2005. And I’m quite sure that I was first led to the straightdope website by a link there, then saw the SDMB and lurked here for a few years before joining in 2009, and that was one of the best decisions of my life. So I’m sorry that they are gone, as I remember some great unbiased and well sourced info from there, but I am thankful to the site for leading me here.

They were a very good site. I disagreed with some of the bits of Canadian law they reviewed, but generally fairly minor. Sorry to hear they’ve gone, but not surprised. They hadn’t put up any new articles for some time.
