Reluctantly — Fuck Texas

If you’re channeling Ivan Drago then you need to reevaluate your parenting technique.

This is why in threads about the Electoral College and state representation in the Senate, I’ve held that having fundamental issues decided by 50.001% majorities is not a good idea.

Eh. The issue with the electoral college is worse - it allows a minority of people to call the shots. And that’s by design. We give small states outsize power compared to their populations.

Let’s actually get to the point where everybody’s vote counts equally. Maybe tyranny of the majority is still an issue, but we still have to deal with a tyranny of the minority before then

Ken Paxton has asked the Texas Supreme Court to quickly intervene to overturn the district court’s order, stating that, “each hour the order remains in place is an hour that Plaintiffs believe themselves free to perform and procure an elective abortion,” and, “Nothing can restore the unborn child’s life that will be lost as a result.”

I’ve heard them say it. They’ll also quite happily tell you that atheists have no objective basis for their morality.
Never addressing the problem with a morality that, at it’s most basic, is ‘Anything God allows is good by definition’.

Yep, I’m related to some of those too. Nothing life-threatening has happened yet, but I did have one cousin who got into a very bad mental space because she wouldn’t seek medical help from people who didn’t share her religious beliefs.

Isn’t the whole point here that the unborn child’s life is already lost? After all, I don’t see him doing a damn thing to help the child to survive after birth. Once born, the child (likely dead child, maybe even stillborn child) no longer has political value for him.

It’s about controlling women’s sexuality.

You are so right.

Now, I don’t like abortion, and I believe life begins at conception. But I believe that my religious beliefs can’t be used in secular law, and a woman has absolute rights over her body.

Red state America is Taliban country. It’s that simple.

If the world was a just place, the child would be born and handed to Paxton so he can watch it die.

Why subject a child to that?

If the world was a just place, Paxton would be forced to carry a child to term and made to personally raise the child without offloading any of the care to others, without abusing the child physically or emotionally, and made to make personal or professional sacrifices if necessary to do so. And be subjected to the judgment of his neighbors or just random strangers on how well or poorly he was caring for the child.

That would be just.

Personally, I’ve always thought the abortion debate would end in an instant if a man took a 50% risk of being the one to get pregnant

Maybe we could take a stillborn fetus and implant it in Paxton’s abdomen, then let it fester and rot inside him, and just ignore his agonized pleas for medical care.

Was her father a Christian Scientist? I couldn’t imagine anyone else saying a thing like that, especially about THEIR OWN CHILD! Why would her father’s opinion have any bearing on the situation, anyway? Was she a minor at the time?

Metallica singer James Hetfield was raised in that cult and saw a lot of unnecessary suffering, and he once said, “If a deer knew how to fix a broken leg, it would.”

I follow several cat rescue webcams. They don’t know how to do c-sections if things go wrong with their births. We do.

The Texas Supreme Court has temporarily stayed the lower court’s order.

There is no justice to be had in this state, just the fleeting illusion of it.

Is there some reason why she cannot leave the state, and get the medical care she needs?

I’m sure that’s what most Texas Republicans secretly wish she would do, as the optics on this are worrisome for them for the reasons @MandaJo lays out. Depending on how she leaves the state, however, she or anyone who assists her may be subject to civil suits for driving through certain counties:

One wonders if there are people watching her house. It wouldn’t surprise me.
