Reluctantly — Fuck Texas

In his most recent election, Greg Abbot got 4.4 million votes. That’s about 25% of registered voters, and 15% of the total Texas population. There’s justifiable criticism to be made about our state’s low voter turnout, but state Republicans have been working overtime to throw up barriers to voting in ways that disadvantage the groups most likely to vote Democrat.

As the OP who’s expressed mixed emotions about starting this thread in the first place, I’ll just say that any attempt to “screw” Texas is just going to hurt the people who are already victims to our state’s Republican power structure. Economic embargo, cutting off federal funding? Greg Abbott and his ilk will be fine. Just like Putin isn’t missing any meals over sanctions.

On the other hand Texas was rated #1 in “workforce” whatever that means.

Now since I love doing statistical analysis I decided to look for correlations between these state rankings and some other statistics about states.

A few observations:

  1. Low (good) “Work force” workforce rank is strongly correlated with %of undocumented immigrants in state (Correlation =-0.57)
  2. Low (good) “quality of life” is quite strongly correlated with % of voters who voted for Biden in 2020 (Correlation = -0.63)
  3. High cost of doing buisiness was correlated with Biden vote (Correlation 0.73)
  4. Quality of life was negatively correlated with Low cost of Buisiness. (Correlation -0.70)

So long story short. Having undocumented immigrants improves you workforce. Democratic states have a better quality of life, but are also more expensive places to do buisiness. Taxing buisnesses makes life better.

Are the signs correct?

Also, the whole state is a giant fucking Handmaid’s Tale cosplay park.

The signs depend on the way the values were coded. The business values were in terms of ranks of states with 1 being the best 50 being the worst. While the Biden vote and the undocumented population were coded directly.

So a negative correlation between Biden vote and quality of life rank means that the Biden states were more likely to be at the top of the list (lower number) on that metric. The positive correlation between the cost of buisiness rank and Biden vote, meant that Democratic states were worse places from this point of view (higher cost of business). etc.

So both the words I wrote and the signs are correct, but the signs are non-intuitive so use the words to get the direction, and the correlation to get the magnitude.

Well, they always do in the movies. And since they’re the main character in their own story, they’ve got plot armor.

The whole state?

You’re basing this huge generalization on what exactly?

American history, Texas is a fucking shithole.

So then, ignorance.

No, the place that tries to ban references to slavery in its schoolbooks, has given us Rick Perry and George W Bush, has an openly corrupt attorney general and wants to prosecute women for abortions is clearly the fucking epitome of human achievement.

Every single piece of Texas does that? Or just the government?

You’re staining every part of the state, every citizen with your hateful bigotry. Take a step back.

And before you say, “No, I didn’t say that…” Bullshit. It’s what you said in response to the question about whether your opinion applies to the whole state.

What an asshole. I guess you got to live up to the “mad” monicker.

I have had to live my entire life with that shithole dragging us down, you can just fucking deal with how much I dislike it. Especially in a thread with the words Fuck Texas in the title.

I am dealing with it by calling you out for it.

How’s that going for you, Tex?

It’s all good.

Except Texas, which as I noted is a shithole. Ever see the Thin Blue Line?

Nope, but I have seen Dazed and Confused.

You intrigue me. Don’t hold back. Get specific. Let’s have details from your own life. You say the shithole has dragged “us” down-- spell out who “us” refers to. And don’t forget to indict the whole state. This enquiring mind wants to know. Seriously.

I do not care what you fucking thick and I think a lot of the posts you have started are problematic.

Oh my. Well, you can “thick” whatever you like, I guess.

If you change your mind, I’m still interested in your story.
