It’s cliché to say everything coming out in theaters and on TV is a remake of something else, but there’s a kernel of truth to it.
But, what remakes are you surprised haven’t been made yet?
Personally, I want to see a Hogan’s Heroes remake.

I always felt that a remake of the reboot of Spider-man’s reboot is way past its due.
Monster Squad
The Goonies
The Day After (well I don’t particularly want to see a remake of this but a big budget World War III film set in the 1980s would be amazing)
Still waiting for a gritty reboot of Inspector Gadget.
I’d like to see a remake of The Puppet Masters, Heinlein’s book. It’s been plagiarized once in the 1950s, then made By Disney in the 1980s with some decent effects, but with the plot annoyingly and unconvincingly re-set to the present day.
There have been two shots at Asimov’s Nightfall, both awful. It’;d be nice to see someone do it straight.
And I’ve long dreamed of filming Fredric Brown’s Arena, which has been ripped off numerous times, and supposedly adapted as an episode of Star Trek (but it really wasn’t). You could do a helluva job with modern CGI. And I think you could make the film without the crutch of voiceovers.
Phillip Jose Farmer’s Riverworld series has had a half-assed TV movie attempt. I’m kind of surprised there hasn’t been a big money major motion picture attempt.
It’s had two TV movie attempts. The first one changed the hero from Sir Richard Burton to some American astronaut (I think the makers thought Americans wouldn’t go for a movie with a British hero. They should watch some James Bond. Or Sherlock Holmes). The second brought Burton in, but he was an ambiguous character. Nobody seems to want to play Farmer’s series straight – they change things, seemingly at random.
I wouldn’t mind seeing someone take another crack at it, but don’t have high hopes.
Condorman.
The Rocketeer.
The Greatest American Hero.
I Dream of Jeannie.
Scarecrow and Mrs King.
With all the wonders of CGI at the filmmakers’ disposable, I’m really surprised that no one has bothered to do a big-budget remake of Fantastic Voyage.
The Last Unicorn. There’s a cult-ish cartoon version people seem to love, but no reason a live-action remake couldn’t be made. One was planned some years ago with Mia Farrow as Molly, but fell through.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show?
C’mon, it’s been 40 years!
I’d be curious to see if a remake of Eddie and the Cruisers could work. I like the basic plot but I don’t know how they could update the timeline — Brian Wilson-esque artist struggles because he wants to do a breakthrough album with a new sound but the sound is 15+ years “ahead of its time” and as such the record company stonewalls him and he (maybe? deliberately?) drives off a bridge. With music industry being such as it is today (and for that matter pop/rock being what it’s become), I’m not quite seeing what the parallel is.
Similar thought on Network. I’d love to see the modern equivalent, but not really sure what it would be.
The Facts of Life.
Imagine how cheesy it would be.
One was announced a few weeks ago- well a Fox tv-special remake.
I’d really like to see Quatermass and the Pit (AKA Five Million Years to Earth redone. They could fix up the crude effects used the first time around, and also fix the mistakes. An underappreciated flick.
On the other hand, look at how remakes and reboots did a terrible job on
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Total Recall
The Andromeda Strain
Day of the Triffids has already been rebooted and done well (the first BBC version , which was much better and more faithful than the 1960s movie). But then they rebooted it again, and made it bad.
Actually, I’d go for remakes of most of the Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Edgar Allen Poe, and H.P. Lovecraft movies that have been made. The older movie versions have generally been awful. even when H.G. Wells was responsible for the film (Things to Come) the result was abysmal. (Verne arguably wasn’t much better. Having read his stage scripts for his own stories, I’m convinced he would’ve screwed up a film adaptation if he’d tried it)
There were a few good cases – Wells’ The Man who Could Work Miracles, for instance. Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I like the Harryhausen films because of his effects work, but they’re not really good expressions of the original Wells or Verne stories.
What about This Island Earth and Creature from the Black Lagoon?
I wouldn’t imagine that **CalMeacham **has any opinion on This Island Earth. ![]()
Isn’t it about time for a remake of Citizen Kane? Instead of Hearst, you could base it on Rupert Murdoch. You could make it in color and 3D. Cast John Malkovich as young Kane’s miserly guardian, Charlize Theron as his singer/mistress.
And in the title role, and perhaps directing, Keanu Reeves.
It would be great!
What?
FYI, this was NPR’s 2014 April Fools joke, made with the cooperation of those three stars. Complete with a poster and everything.
