Does anyone else remember when horrified fundamentalists used to start rumors in the late '70s and '80s that certain heavy metal/hard rock groups names were actually clever acronyms revealing satanic worship?
Here’s some examples I recall with not much thought:
KISS - Knights In Satan’s Service
AC/DC - Anti-Christ, Devil’s Child or After Christ, Devil Comes
RUSH - Residents Under Satan’s House :rolleyes:
Does anyone else remember other examples of this kind of thing?
Well, I remember a band called WASP (led by Blackie Lawless), which some claimed was an acronym for “We Are Sexually Perverted.”
Oddly enough, I think the band LIKED that interpretation… and even if they’d never INTENDED the name to have that meaning, they weren’t eager to dispel the rumor.
I don’t know who came up with this one but when I was in highschool I remember guys always saying Slayer stood for “Satan Laughs As You Eternally Rot”
WASP also meant “We Are Satan’s People”.
Not an acronym, but I remember that Dio stylized their the name such that when upside down it could be read as “devil”.

I was told KISS was an acronym for Kids In Satans Service. Found that especially inappropriate for the reunion-tour…

Apparently they liked it enough to etch it into the vinyl of their first record. (Yes, the first W.A.S.P. album pre-dated CD’s. GOD I’m old…)
I just wanted to say that I’d never heard the Rush one, and it’s one of the funniest things I’ve seen in months 
And isn’t finding a sinister hidden message in the name ‘Slayer’ a little redundant?
Or the irony, since the people calling them that were almost exclusively WASPs themselves…

I always heard RUSH was an acronym for Rulers Under Satan’s House.
Man, I wish I had one of those religious tracts from the early 80’s!
