Christopher Walken is great and I will be incredibly upset if they don’t play the Blue Oyster Cult skit with the cowbell!!!
Ahh, thanks. I hope they do the one where he is psychic.
by the way, it is the best of SNL with Walken, not just an episode that he hosts.
The Blue Oyster Cult sketch was in the promos, so it’ll be there! And that’s good, because I’ve got a fever …
Is this the first “best of” episode for a host, rather than a star?
I just love it that Dopers can sense that this is the sort of information that must be shared. Thanks for the heads up!
anything that involves walken MUST be shared!!!
come on… i mean, i promise at least a couple people cracked a smile when they heard he was on… i did.
Gee, I suppose they might show the cowbell sketch.
Friedo I know they had a best of Steve Martin show. (There may have been other “best of” shows as well).
Johnnyt27 Thanks for that reminder. I’m here on the East Coast and I just saw that legendary sketch. Just one problem - I thought it could have used a little more cowbell - but maybe that’s just me.
Off to Cafe Society.
Cajun Man
for the SDMB
They showed the Blue Oyster sketch, but I’ve seen better “The Continental” sketches. The psychic one remains funny and it was interesting to see a very young Adam Sandler and Chris Rock, and a little sad to see Phil Hartman.
I’m hoping for “Pranksters” before the show is over.
Oh man, that was fantastic. I somehow missed the “Colonel Angus” skit when it first aired (I think I missed that entire episode) and I snarfed Pepsi up my nose over it. The pain was worth it.
Is there a better SNL host than Walken? I don’t think even Tom Hanks or Steve Martin reaches the heights of a good Walken ep.
I am so looking forward to this. It’s on in an hour.
Best SNL hosts:
- Christopher Walken
- Tom Hanks
- Steve Martin
- Alec Baldwin
Aww! No “Centaur Interview!” That’s my favorite.
Somehow, I had never seen the Pranksters thing. That was great.
One thing I’ve been wondering about–when did Walken become known as a comic actor? IIRC, he was seen as a more “serious” actor earlier in his career. I wasn’t that familiar with him when Wayne’s World 2 came out, but I can remember being somewhat surprised at how funny he was.
Now, of course, I think he’s probably the funniest guy in Hollywood. Somebody said that he could read a shopping list and it would be hilarious. So true. I’d love to hear him read a shopping list. Can you imagine? “Milk. Eggs. Cereal. Lettuce. Band-Aids…” I’m cracking myself up just thinking about it.
He was doing comedy in Annie Hall, and that was, what '76?
'77. Annie Hall beat Star Wars for Best Picture!
Walken stole the show in his short scenes in True Romance ('93) and Pulp Fiction ('94). I think those Tarantino roles helped expose him to a new, wider, younger audience. His dancing in the Fatboy Slim video “Weapon Of Choice” helped a lot too. But he’s always been great in everything he’s ever done.
I was really hoping he’d be cast as Willy Wonka in Tim Burton’s remake, since Walken is creepy AND he’s an old-school song-and-dance man, but they cast Johnny Depp instead (who is also great).
I would have loved to have seen Kevin Spacey doing his impersonation of Walken auditioning for Star Wars. Best part for me was the cowbell.
Hadn’t seen the Census skit before. very funny.
Where are you headed, Colonel Angus?
Down south
I got a fevah… and the only prescription is more cowbell!
my fave Walken skit is an old one from sometime in the eighties. He plays Rainbowhead, a takeoff on Rainbowman, the guy with the John 3:16 shirt at sports events, and he’s interviewed on a talkshow by Jan Hooks and Nora Dunn. Damn hilarious. He’s so deadpan and serious, and they’re so stupid. I miss it, although, this year’s cast was one of the funniest ever. I’ll miss Jimmy Fallon.
two Walken SNL classics for me- “Stalk Talk” and “It’s Pat” where he comes back to work from a psychiatric leave only to be driven insane by the enigma of Pat.
The psychic skit is a homage to his role in Stephen King’s The Dead Zone.
