Remote cabin surveillance

Can anyone recommend a system for remotely watching over my little piece of paradise when I’m 150 miles away?

A company called CabinSee had something that looked promising, but it only worked with dial-up computers. (Odd.)

I’d like to keep it under $300, if possible.

Any suggestions?

Do you want full video and audio, with pan, zoom and tilt? Are you looking for an indoor or outside setup? Do you want constant monitoring, or something intermittent?

Is there internet access, phone access, power?

Need more info, but PTZ cameras are getting pretty inexpensive. If there’s a PC and internet access already, then you could just leave a camera running.

Yes, more information is needed, particularly whether you’re considering indoor/outdoor, the distance to a power supply (or whether it’ll be battery operated), and whether there is a computer available.

There is a permamnent power supply.

I’m looking for a something like a motion-activated, records-when-tripped type of thing.

Pan and tilt would be a bonus, but not necessary.

There isn’t phone service yet, but there will be–probably not high-speed, though.

There’s no computer there yet, but there will be after the phone service is in.

Indoor/outdoor? Hadn’t considered it, but I like the idea. Not necessary, though.

The cameras themselves don’t record (you’ll need to add a DVR for that), but you can get ones that will wake up when they sense movement and e-mail you some stills every few minutes or so. They’ll even track the movement if they are smart PTZ. That would probably be the best you can do over dial up. I have one here in front of me that has its own internal web server, so all it needs is a broadband connection (no need to leave a PC running).
