Has anybody else heard this?
???
I haven’t heard about it – that’s a stretch!
I googled it and snoped it to no avail.
Alanis Morisette would make a fairly good Janis, I think. Renee has a sort of similar vibe to Janis in certain ways, but generally I don’t see it.
LC
I can’t think of a single actress in Hollywood that could pull that role off (even assuming the singing was dubbed).
I hope they don’t make the Jim Morrison/Val Kilmer mistake. AAAHHHH!!
So who should play Bill Bennett on the one date that Janis and Bill had?
Actually, I think she would be a good choice. There may be a better choice somewhere, but among A (and B) list actresses-- I think she might be the best bet.
I have not heard of this project.
When I first read the title of this thread, I thought…Rene as Janis…no way.
But thinking about it…the girl certainly does know how to beef up for a part (B. Jones Diary) and she does have the somewhat puffy face, and she does have pathos…ya know, she might not be bad.
The trick will be to get a good script.
I loved Janis Joplin.
I was stupid.
I had free tickets to see a concert in Chicago…but I was invited to a party the same night, so I said, “I’ll see her next time.”
There was no next time.
I can still kick myself for not having gone to that concert.
Trivia: Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison…all died at age 27.
What a waste.
I think maybe Rene could pull it off. I agree, the script is crucial.
I did manage to see Jim Morrison before he died, but with Jimi Hendrix, I made the same mistake as DMark did with Janis.
I thought Val Kilmer did an okay job.
I thought Val Kilmer was excellent as Jim Morrison. He’s never been better, IMHO. It was just the movie that was crummy.
I think if anybody could pull off the role of Janis, it could be Renee. The singing could be a problem, though. Although I think she was competent in Chicago, I just don’t think Renee could project the power and passion of Janis. I think they’d have to dub her singing.
They would absolutely have to dub her singing. Plus her dialogue. Renee doesn’t have the balls to play Janis.
Maybe it is an East Texas thing…
I heard this on Access Hollywood last night. All they said was that the actress is slated to play Janis Joplin and didn’t provide any details.
I don’t know if Rene Zellweger could pull this off. She can certainly act, but I was not at all impressed by her singing in Chicago, and there’s no way she could pull off Janis Joplin. I agree that the singing would definitely have to be dubbed.

When Chris Farley died, my youngest brother said, “Chris Farley died at 33, John Belushi died at 33, Jesus died at 33, and now I’m 33. Coincidence? I think not.”
I would rather see them just find some unknown female blues/rock singer to play Janis than to have some Hollywood actress try to play her. It would be a lot more real that way, and to be truly respectful to Janis it would absolutely have to be real.
I saw on an E! TV scroll that RZ was going to play JJ.
I guess she could pull it off, if you booze/party her up and not let her take a shower or change her clothes while making the movie.
I have never understood the appeal of Janis Joplin, she was very ugly, her voice was atrocious, the Boozing and Drugs.
As a continuation of an earlier hijack…
I can’t believe anyone would dis Val Kilmer’s performance as Jim Morrison. He WAS Jim Morrison. He sounded like him, looked like him, and from what I could tell, had his mannerisms nailed. He even wore Jim’s leather pants in the movie. It was like the reincarnation of Jim Morrison, I tell you. It was so good it was eerie.
Too bad the rest of the movie blew chunks. Oliver Stone, doncha know.
I also heard that today, and that she beat out Melissa Etheridge for the part. (Melissa would do a good job with the singing.)
I’d like to see if she can pull off the voice, and in particular, her laugh. Her cackle.
I hope Renee does Janis justice.
I always wanted Lily Taylor to do it, but she’s too old now…
Ugh! What a horrible choice. I don’t get Rene Zellwegger at all. She can’t act, she can’t sing and she’s not even hot. She just does that stupid baby voice in every movie. I hate her.
Melissa Ethelridge would have been a much better choice.
Someone else who has the balls (but would require some make-up) is Courtney Love.
