CalMeacham:
Actually not that far off the mark. Ridley Scott took the title from Alan E. Nourse’s science fiction novel about people who provide illicit medical supplies (like scalpels = blades) to black market doctors in a dystopian future. Scott evidently hated “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” as a title, and “Bladerunner” sounded infinitely cooler.
You can’t say he stole it – he explicitly thanks Nourse (and William S. Burroughs, who did a scenario based on it) at the end of the credits for Bladerunner .
Nourse’s book is well worth the read, by the way.
And Nourse’s book is actually called “THE Bladerunner” IIRC
