In your attempt to sort through the “true Scotsman” rubbish of the Republicans, don’t be tempted to buy into any of the broad brush thinking. Most of the South will probably be in the McCain column, but don’t forget to take a look at post-election maps that show the popular vote. You will find that we are not as red (“Real American”) as the Republicans might have you think. We will be varying shades of purple.
Let’s be clear here. Obama wants to “spread the wealth around” by increasing taxes on rich people and making cash payments to poor people. He’s not just increasing taxes on rich people to pay the expenses of government as you discussed in your previous post. For those who don’t know, Obama’s panoply (plethora?) of new tax credits and increases in old tax credits would increase the number of non-taxpayers (i.e., those who don’t pay tax) and increase cash payments to those who already receive cash payments. This is what is offensive to me, not just simply increasing the capital gains rate to Clinton levels or whatever.
Also, you don’t have issues that you are offended about? Like if someone says “abortion is murder and if you support a woman’s right to choose to murder her baby then you are guilty of murder to” you don’t get offended? This is what I meant by “offended” (i.e., extreme disgust and aversion).
Indeed. Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, and Louisiana will not be close, but North Carolina and Virginia will be, and Arkansas, Mississippi and Georgia may well be. Florida is in a category all its own.
I don’t want the US to increase taxes on the rich for the purpose of increasing cash payments to the poor. This position is not equivalent to believing that poor people don’t deserve any help.
Disapproving of such a proposed policy is one thing. Saying that you find it just as offensive as the use of the nastiest racial slur in the American vocabulary is another thing, and a much more batshit-insane one.
I certainly don’t get offended at somebody merely stating the opinion that abortion is murder, or that people who support abortion rights are morally guilty of murder. I strongly disagree with that position, but I can tolerate it as a sincere conviction, just as I can tolerate the view of many animal-rights supporters that killing animals is murder.
Stating such a position isn’t even remotely comparable to flinging around hate-filled epithets like “nigger”. That word isn’t necessary to express any conviction or describe a moral viewpoint. It’s nothing but the verbal equivalent of a gratuitous kick in the teeth, and as such it is intrinsically FAR more offensive than any mere statement of a moral belief, even one that I might happen to strongly disagree with.
I don’t hate the rich, but simply see no reason for altruism on their behalf. My self-interest demands class war and a dictatorship of the proletariat, guided by the revolutionary cadres, is the best means to make my self-interest manifest.

So liberals wanting forced redistribution of earned wealth equates to conservatives wanting…well…nothing?
